Why are you moving out on your own? Are you being evicted from the family home when you turn 18 and are no longer a minor?

The reason I'm moving out is because after we are done High School we have to move out and get our own place to live (that's the rule here)

May I ask you, where do you live? I live in New York, USA, and don't know of anywhere that decides for a person where they live, when to leave home etc. I'm sure this idea is foreign to the people on this site and we want to help, so maybe you can tell me why this rule exists, who made it.......why would a person just finishing high school think that they can move out on their own without an income?

As far as making money, there are tons of ways to find out your strengths, how to apply for jobs, how to interview......what advice are you looking for?

well, I live in Ontario, Canada and I guess it's just since I'm done High School and going to college, I would need to move out and find a place because around here with the college I want to go 2 there is no dorms and so u have to either rent a room or an apartment and well, I'm just looking for advice as to how to survive, such as how to focus on bills and rent, how to spend money wisely, and how to handle any hard situations such as finances and stuff like that, I would explain better but this is all new to me because I have never had to think of these kind of things before so it's all a learning process

Hi, Just to answer your question, yes I have been in your situtation. My mother was mentally ill and could not wait to get me out of the house. ( I wanted away from her too, she was very abusive) Anyway I got a job at McDonalds when I turned 16, and began saving almost all of my paychecks, as much as possible. For a while I lived in a hotel room that I could pay for by the week.

In my opinion RENT comes first, you can always go to food banks for food, but not many people want to pay your rent for you. Then utilities, which is why I lived out of a hotel room for a while,just one payment covered everything. Start looking in your local papers for all types of rental property, some are all bills paid. I once found a small apartment, just one street away from my job, so I could walk to work.

Be brave you can do this, and will be very proud of yourself later in life.

You need to list your income and also your expeniture every month, and live stictly within the budget. You might be lucky enough once you have work, to allow yourself some "own" money which you need not account for, buy something that is a pleasure, save it, save up for something bigger, anything you like. Only remember, the money on your budget list belongs to others not to you. You have had the goods or services and a good name with money is a valuable asset. I liked the advice from Dream that you might find hotel accomodation for a while. One bill. It means that you are well fed and you do not need much space for now. Common sense is the name of the game, I know you will manage well, we all start off like that more or less. Let us know how things turn out.

Well thanks for letting us know the situation.....so...what steps are you taking toward the goal of living on your own? I agree-you can do it/if you need us-we're here!

thank you everyone for the good advice and well, the steps I'm taking are contacting the government place and setting up a meeting so we can get something arranged and maybe apply for welfare

Do you need welfare? Rather seek additional skills to equip yourself for better work prospects. Welfare should be a last, not first resort. Even volunteer work adds to your CV. Be the best that you can be, do not accept that you should be less
