Also to add to that, I have been cut on my food stamps so much this past year, at the beginning of 2012 I was recieving over 700.00 and now I barely get under 300. It is really hard budgeting cash into the equation. Just sharing, that bit of info. I got used to buying pretty much anything I wanted, but now at the end of the month I have to worry about if we are going to eat that day, because we have no money for food. But thank good ness for emergancy food banks, that has helped a little bit.
And we used every bit of it.
A sample of things I bought on $700
bread (6 loaves) 3 white, 3 whole wheat
chicken, (whole fryers, 4 of them)
hamburger 4 lbs
pork chops, (familly pack split into 4th, 1 each week)
beef (stew, ribs, roast)
veggies (carrots, celery, cauliflower, brocolli, lettuce, cabbage, radishes, jalepenos, tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, corn)
fruits (apples, oranges, strawberries, bananas, grapes, usually a treat was whatever fruit was in season, melons, berries, pomeganates, etc)
macaroni, the biggest bag
rice, the biggest bag,
sugar, 25 lbs
flour 25 lbs
milk 4 gallons, one each wk sometime we ran out by end of month
cheese 2 big blocks of medium cheddar
eggs 5 dozen eggs
beans, the biggest bags (we eat a lot of beans)
top ramen (usually a mixture of different ones 24 pkgs)
spaghetti noodles(sauce)
luxury items if we had enough
corned beef hash
chili beans in a can
canned soups
boxed mac and cheese
hamburger helper in a box
our staples if we ran out
salt
ketchup
soy sauce
dressings
tapatio
seasonings for cooking
This is just a sample of what I bought monthly if I needed it. I usually bought in large amounts if it was nonperishable, so that way I would never ran out. such as flour and sugar, if they had my staples in a large container, I would buy that and transfer as needed to smaller containers.
Now with my small amount, I barely get a weeks worth of food, but I manage to stretch it as far as I can, and have to use cash to buy the rest which amounts to about 2-300 extra a month. Its hard but i'm doing it.
i firmly believe I can use cash, but It's difficult going for the change when i've been so used of living on fs.
I was very uncomfortable on fs' but used it anyway.
Thank you for your comment though I just though this might be an insight of what I buy on a monthly/quarterly basis.
Everything on this list was bought as needed basis.
My kids do eat alot of grape nut cereal after it has been soaked long enough to be soft...cream of wheat, oatmeal..make alot of meat loafs..
Food is just so expensive and its overated..Love to bbq in summer. but do eat alot of beans and rice , homemade soups in the winter. chilli..
A jar of Honey actually is better for the immunity and goes further than processed sugars..
Its all about minimizing and not wasting ..and buying nutritious food.
Just know that we are surviving and its hard, but we are doing it.
Thanks for the input :)
