This community is for people who are struggling to meet financial obligations of any kind. The way I read it you are on the hook for $1,100, which is shared so $550. The rest if you didn't sign anything is her responsibility. Creditors can scream all they want but you are not on the hook for it. Let her worry about it.
As far as your wife's retirement. She can't work part-time? I know a few folks who are retired and draw SS and work part-time and they are so happy.
As far as the clients not paying... if you really doubt you will receive any funds, why not go to a collector? You will get 50% of the bill that is owed... but 50% is better then nothing...
I had a stepson who lost his job because of alcoholism (about ten years ago.) My ex and him were both great at playing the victim and they could have sucked me into it as well.
He was 22 and an adult. I charged him rent. He hated it and the ex hated it, but it made him get off his butt and find a job and it made the ex more conscious of our money problems.
It would have been real easy to play the pity card and be the victim right along with the both of them...
A saying my AA sponsor said to me years ago, with another problem of mine, was "Get out of the problem and into the solution." There is always a solution if I don't want to be a victim...
