Now that I can stay in the UK and am done with Visas, I just got done applying to become a citizen of the UK. I'll keep my citizenship as an American and will (hopefully) become a dual citizen!
The process is long and somewhat costly - close to $2,000. So I paid for it with a CC. I did it right after I got my statement, so I should have close to two months to save up for it when the bill arrives. I get paid monthly, so I have over half of it hidden away in my checking account. Next month, in theory, the other half will arrive and then payment sent.
I have not paid a penny in CC interest in over 7 years and I'm not about to start now. If I don't have all the money, I'll take the balance from my savings.
Speaking of savings - this is the first time in ten years that I didn't pay myself first. I always treat savings as an expense and always "pay it" before any other bill is paid. It's a horrible feeling not paying that "bill" this month, but it will feel even better when I pay that CC bill in full next month in full with no interest added.
One other piece of info - many American citizens when they move abroad give up their American citizenship mainly because of tax purposes. I looked into it but I won't be doing that. I'll just fill out yearly 1040's and FBAR's for the government. The cost to end American citizenship? Over $5,000

I also did not know that giving up USA Citizenship cost money....wow....
when I was over seas....On Guam USA it was a USA Territory so I did not need to do anything but live life on island in the South Pacific...
I am still struggling along with things....I recently reset my solvency date when my puppy got into the other dogs medications that she ate 22 pills of.....I needed to talk to Animal Poison Control and they will not talk with out $65 payment being processed first....and I had just used my money grocery shopping so my Girlfriend used her Amex card on the call with us at Animal Poison control....
I have just started over 2/1/22...I do have a to me very large CD in bank but I needed to deal in terms of fast as possible to be able to make sure my puppy would not die....
Also sorry about your bankruptcy. I thought you got your inheritance before bankruptcy and avoided having to do it.
