This community is for people who are struggling to meet financial obligations of any kind. Financial challenges include everything from the day-to-day challenges of making ends meet to managing credit card debt to bankruptcy. Get support from others who are going through similar obstacles on the road back to financial stability.
Well the first month is 3/4 over but for me, it's just beginning. I started the new year in a hospital. A cancer hospital. On Halloween of 2016, I was diagnosed with throat cancer (specifically tonsil) and spent three weeks in the hospital helping me to finish radiation and chemo treatments. Been home for three weeks and am just starting to feel alive again... I lost over 30 pounds but the appetite is returning, it would help if the taste buds would join in... in time I guess.
I've been pretty fortunate with it all. Haven't worked since November, but I haven't had to touch any savings to survive. Was sitting down earlier and figured I still have around $850 before I would begin touching the savings, which shouldn't happen. I do hope to be released to work again by March 1st.
My Higher Power gave me a gift after my treatments, with the uK government granting me a licence to be a security officer in the UK. I took courses and passed them all to be a front-line door supervisor. The third highest ranking security official in the UK behind only personal bodyguards and armored vehicle emploees. So, as soon as I return to work I will be looking at other work.
The thing with this licence that is great is all the background checks the government did. With that licence I can work in schools, hospitals, banks, anywhere that deals with money and alcohol. So a new door has opened for me in my new country.
Finally, when figuring out my finances, I counted up all my change. I haven't spent a peeny, or a two-pence, five-pence, or ten-pence coin in over a year. A pence is basically saying cents. Anyway, within a year I have over 50 pounds(dollars) in change. The most popular coin here is a 20 pence, those I have over 10 pounds in. And recently I decided, not to spend any two pound coins. In full, right now I have over 80 pounds in coins...
Always enjoy having little emergency7 funds around, I never feel broke when I can see how much change I have been able to save...
I just got to keep debt free and live within my means...

I invited Bill to have dinner with me last Sunday. He wasn't willing to drive 7 hours to mid Michigan and teased me with his beautiful ribs!!! So, of course I ate alone and had cedar salmon

I have not been here in a long while and while it was good to see a message from you, I am so sorry about your health diagnosis. I hope that you are doing well today. It has been about two months since you wrote this post. I will say a prayer for your healing and that you will be returned to good health. Congratulations on the license. That will open many doors for you. I am always so inspired by your shares about savings money in many way. Keeping your pennies and allowing them to build up is a nice little fund; not hundreds of dollars, but enough for a small urgency. One penny is a seed, which sprouts and grows. I worked as security guard on Guam for about month after typhoon guarding a power depot of parts to the electrical grid.
Right now I'm in remission. I have some bloodwork, a CT Scan, and a check-up in May, which should tell if it is gone or if more treatment (surgery) is needed.
My goal was to be back to work by the last week in February. I started work the first week in March. I worked two days and started applying for jobs in the security field. Two days later I had an interview for one and three days after that I got hired!!!
Bill, in the UK, the security business is regulated and licensed by the government. I take a lot of pride that I passed all the courses and the exams to get my license. I passed all the background checks. Part of my job is counting cash, so the credit check had to be done as well. People with a criminal background can not get a security license in the UK. People on some meds can not get a license. People with mental health issues can not get a license. AND in the UK, 99% of the security jobs require a license.
