Years ago my ex-wife had cancer and we racked up over $25,000 in medical bills and this was after insurance paid their part.

I went to our local welfare office to see if there was anyway the government could help us. I didn't care what. A gas voucher, or food stamps, anything. We were beyond broke.

The answer I got blew my mind. As long as I was working they couldn't help me but if I could get fired from my job I would have all the help I could ask for.

Here I was trying to be an honest person and was being told to be less honest and all would be well.

I couldn't do it. I kept working and eventually the town where we lived had a fund raiser for us.

But it is a damned if you do and damned if you don't society we live in. Sit back and wait for an answer... it will come...

This society is placing too much pressure on young Mums who want to work. There needs to be a greater sense of community in the Western World rather than Government-enforced workaholism. We have become too 'Every Man, Woman and Child for themselves' in our world.

As a mother, I understand when you want to give your children more opportunities than we might have had when we were young or didn't have but the stress with those bills can be damaging. I see that you are seeking a second job but you are worried about time consuming. I am a part of that club to. A single mother with child support but I am a single mother that would stick together with other single mothers. I am new to this group. I have looked for a PT job, to supplement my FT job. Like you, one starts thinking it thru. IF I get a PT job, then when will I have time to cut the grass, shovel snow, etc?

The 4 PT jobs that I applied for, only offered me hours which I have to be at my FT job! I can't be 2 places at 1-time!

My sister works OT hrs consistently, just to make ends meet. But on the other hand, she has no life. She must take whatever hours are available, which means waking up in middle of night, going to work, coming home to get a few hours of sleep, then off to work her normal schedule. Her son pays the price as well because he is left a lone a lot.

I am so frustrated by my situation that it becomes depressing. I wish there was some miracle words that I could offer you to help you along. Hugs.

Boy, can I understand that situation!! I lost my job when my 3 kids were really young. I wasn't getting child support either. This was 2000. I went to apply for any kind of aid, but the lady told me...." I'm sorry, but your 1996 Geo is too much of an asset; we can give you $10 a month in food stamps, but that is all. I'm like....in tears....saying "So, I sell my car.....my ONLY way to work.....and you'll help me????" I told them to shove their $10 month food stamps. I couldn't feed a family of 4 on that for one Fin Day! Disgusting.....
