BTW, my deleted rant almost matches the time Hubby said I was cute when I was curled up with cramps. Yeah, he said that. "Aw, you're so cute when you're balled up in pain." Yes, well, I'm not a puma for nothing. When he hit the floor, I asked him if he felt cute now that *his* reproductive parts hurt. Now he knows.... give me chocolate, back out of the room carefully, and say *nothing* about *cute* and *pain* in the same da*n day. Ever. Again. Yes, I whacked him in his family jewels. I was, at the time, curled up with post-miscarriage cramps. I was not emotionally stable, remotely rational, or possibly sane that day. We're still married, he's intact, everyone calm down! Even Hubby looks back on that and says, "Wow, I said that... ANd you let me live?"
***
I did not sleep enough again, can you tell? I am all raw nerves and cranky-pants. Weather changed *again*. And we had a possum on the porch and Hubby freaked out and by the time I calmed him down.... Sleep? Yeah, the possum slept. Me, not so much. Honestly, just turn on a light nad yell "Get outta here!" and stomp your foot and possums waddle off without too much worry. Nope, he's all, "Get a shovel! Get a rake! It's between me and the shovel!".... I swear, you'd think it was Possum Apocalypse, LOL.

A week until St. Patrick's Day, for those inclined to celebrate, care, or drink SHamrock Shakes at McDonald's. I admit, I like one small SHamrock Shake every year, then never see McD's again till.... my next Shamrock Shake. I love mint. Yum!

Busy day in history.
Back in 241 BC, Rome's navy sunk about 50 or so of Carthage's ships. This was a big deal b/c Carthage was a huge commercial empire, and Rome ran afoul of them. (Rome idd a lot of that.) Carthage and Rome fought a few wars, formal or otherwise, that eventually led to Rome taking over the Mediterranean from Carthage in terms of commercial dominance and then political and cultural dominance, too, over a few centuries' time. Look this up under "Punic Wars". The city of Cartagena in Spain, btw, was originally "Cartagena Nuevo", or "New Carthage" under the Romans, and is still an important naval station. Like Barcelona, on my list of Must-See cities on the bucket list. Hubby was to both and said the'yre gorgeous. Worth the visit for the architecture, ambience, etc.
Speak of Rome, Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon this date in 49 BC, a symbolic gesture that meant he had crossed the boundary into what was considered Roman lands (modern Italy) and thus declaring war (without declaring it) on Rome itself, even though he was technically its premier general, skilled politician, and highborn noble type. In short, he wanted more than Rome gave him, in part b/c his political foes feared how far he'd go. He was, for his day a "progressive populist". By modern standards, meh. Thus do times change. Bear in mind, Julius Caesar's "radical" ideas included removing corrupt officials from office and *gasp* making legislation only about the issue, no little "riders" attached to sneak other things in/past the Senate and Assembly. (Sound familiar?) Caesar won his war, became Dictator (an appointed position) of Rome, wasa assassinated, and left such division and strife behind that Rome's republic became an empire, headed by his great-nephew, the ultimate public-works-and-political-shmoozer Gaius Octavius, later named Augustus. Yes, we named the month August for him and July for Julius. Awww.... BTW, Gaius Octavius-turned-Augustus-Caesar really did do a ton to shape up ROme with public works, but his political genius lay in convincing everyone he was just one more guy in the Senate, really, he was, don't honor him so, thanks so much for the honors, and gee, you take my opinion as law, that's so sweeeeet! .... His buddy Agrippa had the military genius to back that up but never tried for more. No one is sure why to this day. Agrippa seemed happy enough to get to general things and help fix sewers and roads and design things. He had that knid of mind, Augustus let him have fun, and from all accounts, the two combined had all the genius you'd ever never want in one person. Which may be why they got away with it and Juilus Caesar---reputed to be skilled in war and in poiltics equally right up till he got assassinated---did not.
I'll note further that the first Julian emperor---Augustus---remained the best. The line devolved into Nero, Caligula, and other fun types. Oh joy.
And if you think mine sfaety isn't relevant, today in 1906, over 1000 died in a mine explosion/collapse at Courrieres, France. An arrangement of shafts and pitheads designed to make it easier to get coal to the surface ironically meant the initial explosion of coal dust (sparked by what, no one is sure) edned up traveling through what may have been 100km of tunnelworks. (About 60 miles.) That is a rough estimate, btw, and contested, b/c frankly, the maps of the minig company didn't use consistent measurements for depth and so on. But 1000-plus men died, soooo.... Figure it was a damn big kaboom.

And on this day, I sign off to get more sleep. Cheers,

My cat is going on trial for crimes against skink-anity. SIX in six weeks. Three this last week alone. The crack is maybe 1/4 inche wide. Maybe. Skink skitters past, her paw shoots out, her claw hooks in, she yanks, and somehow, having defied physics... WHAM. Skink-o-rama.Now, don't get me wrong, it's nice that she's a pesticidal maniac, but OMG. Skinks do no harm. They don't come inside. WTF.So,...

I'm alive, I'm sleeping like a rock, and for some reason I wanted cherry juice so that seems to be helping. (??? Weirdo that I am.)***Infamous therapies over history:1. The Attic. The madwoman in the attic is a motif in literature going waaaaaay back: the nutty female relative is locked in the attic. (See: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte for a grotesquely racist version of it, and Charlotte Perkins...
Great history lesson, as always! For some reason (probably a bit of twistedness) it popped into my mind that when you were talking about the possum with your hubby that you should have said "is that a possum in your lap or are you just happy to see me?". I know it doesn't make any sense, but I rarely do. I hope that you are sleeping even as I type!
hmmmm ranting? The great president of the U.S of effing A said something very close to:
I don't care what they pass as long as they repeal Obamacare. I can't get that sentence out of my head, it's just so irresponsible and mean spirited...petty. It has no regard for the people of this nation whatsoever. Good or bad, the pres is now just trying to wipe out anything that has Obamas name on it or that he signed or that he looked at, touched winked at, thought about..etc. All because it's from the other side of the isle..and from Obama in particular. AND YES, I do realize that the left tries to wipe out the right also...but that's for another rant. THERE. I took a breath and am better now.
Oh...we had air temp of -7 with a -30 windchill factor this morn. Springtime in the frozen tundra continues! lol Anyway...I'm anxious the last few days again...worried about being worried I guess. A beer and a slice of life giving pizza should help tonight!
Hoping you all find a reason to smile today,
Kel
Sorry I didn't check in yesterday-had a dream Wednesday night that was significantly more terrifying than my usual ones, was pretty anxious yesterday morning and basically didn't do anything above the bare minimum. I felt a little better after going for a run, but my day got really busy after that. I also stayed out too late so I'm tired, painful, nauseous and have a headache :/ Plus it's cold and snowy, and tomorrow the wind chills might not get above zero. I'm working tomorrow so I get to leave early today at least. Hugs to everyone
Miki, oh no. Please, go easy, okay? Self-care, an dnever apologize. Sometimes we can handle a check-in, sometimes we crawl off and try to just sleep.
Angela, I hope your GERD responds to the protonix. I've used it with some success on my nastiest GERD, so I know it has its down sides, but anything beats that whole "stomach revolts" routine.
I can't sleep b/c LilMiss got in and is under the dresser and I can't get her out. Hubby worries about a possum on th eporch, then goes to work and leaves me with a wet cat under the dresser? She's a stubborn one. Shadow comes out for cuddles and treats, and he'll take over a padded porch chair, he's fine. LilMiss? Oh, she's a Little Mischief Miscreant Miss!
BTW, yes, I let him live... I couldn't get up to kill him, basically.
Another day without power or Internet here. I am typing on my phone. The new generator is humming away in the driveway keeping us warm. The local utility says that we may have power restored by Sunday. Bone chilling temperatures here for the weekend. A lot of unhappy, frozen people around here.
In other news, it appears that my partner aka Captain Raccoon may have finally found and sealed the last raccoon entry point to the attic. He came home a couple of days ago and commenced his daily perimeter sweep to see if he could finally find out where they were still getting in. He noticed a piece of soffit under the eaves looked odd and pulled on it. To his horror, there was about 24" of it really not attached to anything. The raccoons could do a little Cirque de Soliel acrobatics on the uneven gutters and pop right into the raccoon Airbnb in my attic. He beat a hasty retreat to garage and found a piece of metal panning to close that off. There are enough screws in it to rivit a destroyer hull but it appears that has finally solved the problem. Mr. Raccoon took a bad fall onto the deck after he attempted to gain entry again. I'm sure the raccoon equivalent of Dr. No is lurking next door in the haunted forest plotting his next assault on my castle.
I'm pretty tired today from running around like a lunatic yesterday trying to locate a generator. Have to stay put even though the generator is cabled to the deck as some *nice* person may attempt to take it.
My eyes are getting tired from squinting at my phone. Everyone stay warm! Thinking of all of you today!
Kel, sorry you are worried about being worried. I have been there before and it isn’t fun. I really try not to let things I have no control of take over my mind. However, that is easier said than done some days. Beer and pizza sound divine!! I hope you don’t freeze to death with those temps. It is snowing here again today, but just flurries. I truly hate the temp swings though. Take care and have a good weekend.
I hope your day goes fast Miki. I am glad you get to leave early. Stay warm.
Fantod, I am glad you were able to find a generator. We have 2 and hubby wanted to get rid of both of them since our camper has an onboard generator. I think I talked him into keeping at least one for when the power is out. We were out for 4 days one summer and needed something for the refrigerator and freezer. I hope you are able to keep warm and get some rest. Yay for finding how the darn raccoons kept getting in. Your partner gets a gold star for that. I hope all of the other lurkers realize you mean business and stay the hell out. This Airbnb is closed! Take it easy today.
Angela, I am glad your doctor was responsive to your needs. I hope doubling the protonix helps. Hopefully your pain will settle down soon too. Take it easy and don’t overdo it today.
My feet are feeling much better. I will still ice them throughout the day. That seemed to help a lot. My graduate students are having a symposium today so I was here early to help set up for that with them. They are good kids (adults really). Even with 2 Tylenol PM’s and my Tizanadine (muscle relaxer) sleep didn’t occur. Maybe a few hours total. I am not sure what my deal is, but I am not liking it. However after I wake up I break out into a sweat, so I am thinking it is hormonal. I go to the GYN next week for drugs. I have gone 6 months without them since my hysto, but can’t do it anymore. I hate taking meds though. I pick my daughter and her friends up from the bus station at 5 today. They are coming for the weekend to stay with Sonny while I go to Ft. Dix with hubby for his drill weekend. Of course this morning he says he has a meeting tomorrow from 4:30-till god knows when. So I have a feeling it will be a weekend of me in a room. I guess there is an outlet mall, so I might take a stroll there. I would like to find another pair of sneakers. My doc said the 900 series of New Balance would probably be the best. We will see. Sorry for rambling.
Have a good day everyone. I will try to check in later.
Kel, your springtime in the frozen tundra looks very cold! I'm not sure I could call that spring. haha It sounds like you have a nice dinner planned. Mine will consist of chocolate toast, my guilty pleasure, and a new Tangled Ever After movie on Disney tonight. :-) Living the dream.
Miki, I hate bad dreams. I hope tonight is better for you, and you get some rest before working this weekend. Have you had another date? :-) I hope work goes good and you enjoy the extra time off today.
Angela, I'm glad the nurses got back to you so quickly and you can take extra meds this weekend to help with the GERD. I hope your appt. goes good, and you enjoy lunch. I wish I could do lunch with my mom. I work too far from her.
Fantod, Oh man a power outage is like the apocalypse to me. My sister and her family love camping so they end up having fun when the power goes out. I'm all about my power and no camping. I hope it comes back on sooner than anticipated. I'm thinking about you.
TGIF. My pain is very high, I really do not want to move my body. Tonight I'm watching a new Disney movie with my girls, Repunzel is my favorite. Yay! Tomorrow we celebrate the puppies 1st Birthday. I need to get party plates and the dog cake from Petsmart tomorrow. My girls are very excited and Addison wants to invite people. LOL. I'm hoping maybe her cousins will come over and we can bake a cake or brownies.
I hope everyone has a good weekend.
Twin, oooh, Disney movie! *yay* Use the movie to sit very still on ice/heat, okay? Big purrs to you, too.
Fantod, Hurray! A concussed raccoon! Now get some rest this weekend, okay?
I tried sleeping, but wrangling LilMiss led to a Charlie-Chaplin-esque chase. She's finally out, I showered, and now I just want to sleep but I can't b/c the phone keeps ringing. Mom's stuff. Gotta keep track. I'm on my fifth notebook now, I think.
Serves him, right, Leo, for saying something that dumb! Sorry your phone keeps ringing, I hate days like that. Good luck keeping track of your mom's stuff.
I got a rant for you. You know how I went to Costco a couple days ago? And I had to use my husband's card and they gave me a good scolding? I don't have one because my husband is on his mom's business account and they can't add me. So last night I brought the situation up to hubster AGAIN and told him why doesn't he just get off his mommy's account so he can open one with me, his *wife*? His startling response: "If you want a Costco card, go down there and open up your own account." WTH!?!! Seriously. He does not treat our marriage like a marriage or like we're on the same team... seems like he just treats me like I'm that person he has to live with. And as long as he does his own thing and I do my own thing, things in his world will be fine. I know a Costco card doesn't seem like a big deal to some people, but it's all those little and big things that add up. All those things combined make me feel like he doesn't want me on his team, if that makes any sense.
Netflix binged all day yesterday. I just didn't have much energy to do anything. And I was kind of feeling depressed. Just wondering where my life is going. My mom had some activities at the senior center but canceled because of a threat of a thunderstorm. It hadn't even started raining yet. So she was stuck at home with me all day and watched netflix with me. After spending the entire day with her the previous day, I was hoping for a break from her. I notice a trend with her, she seems to want to stay home when I do. This is not good!
We were planning on watching the new X-men movie but my husband has a meeting that came up that will be several hours long during the afternoon. We want to see the pianist tonight, so the movie will have to be another day. It's probably not a good idea to go to a movie and then directly to a concert.
Back in a little bit.
Hugs.
Kel, I like how your brain thinks lol. Good humor. I miss the days when I used to have a sense of humor. My aunt said I was a joy to be around. Really? Hard to believe. I've been watching this tv show on netflix called Scandal and it's about the politicians in Washington (R and D) always plotting against each other. Seems pretty realistic to me.
Angela, sorry you're feeling so yuck today. I'm glad the nurses got back to you in timely response and you'll be seen on Monday. I hope your Gerd will ease up today and the puking will stop too. Healing hugs
Miki, sorry you had a nightmare and overdid it yesterday. I hope today is an easier day for you. I also hope your pain can come down and your dreams are better tonight. Those nightmares are somehting else :(
Fantod, that's crazy and I feel sorry for all the frozen people in your area. Wish I could send some warmer Hawaiian air that way! Glad you were able to get a generator. No power for that amount of time would give me anxiety. When I was growing up I didn't care too much, though... during the times we lived in S.E. Asia, we had many times of power & water outages. But when you're a kid, you're much more flexible about life's challenges. Now with chronic pain and fatigue, not so much. Any little change and the earth falls off its axis. Prayers and hugs for you and all those affected.
Bbmom, good to hear your feet are doing better but sorry about the insomnia. I can't function that way, and a total zombie. I hope your doc helps you figure out what's going on and things can improve for you. I'm glad the interns are good kids. You always sound so busy!
Twin, sorry your pain remains high :(. The puppy party sounds really fun :)!! I hope you don't over extend yourself though. But yay!
Gotta run, my cats are throwing a protest due to their breakfast being 5 mins late. Poor starving creatures.
bbmom, I'm glad you're going to the GYN next week for drugs. I hate taking them too, but my body feels more stable. I hope you have a good weekend, and aren't stuck in a room alone all weekend.
Kel, you make me laugh with that possum comment! Enjoy your “spring” weather! I really don’t know how you survive in that frozen tundra. Could it be in the genes? Our (adopted) son has “Minnesota genes” and he has never felt cold the way I, as a 4th gen californian do. You’re always welcome to come warm up in sunny CA … enjoy your beer and pizza.
Miki, hope you’re feeling better. Angela, so glad your doctors are, finally, taking good care of you!
Blue, your husband sounds just like mine. His favorite phrase is “Divide and Conquer,” meaning he does his own thing and expects me to go do mine. It helped when the kids were little and I became sick, and he would “babysit” them. Huh? Not “father” them, but babysit. SMH That was 15 years ago. I don’t feel like he doesn’t want me to do things with him, he’s just a busy, active guy. And our kids have had many experiences with him that I couldn’t do with them.
Well, I’m worn out already! I apologize for not getting to everyone. I do follow, and send hugs and prayers for everyone!
I’ll try to reach out later, or tomorrow, or Sunday.
