Radiofrequency ablation (or RFA) is a procedure used to reduce pain. An electrical current produced by a radio wave is used to heat up a small area of nerve tissue, thereby decreasing pain signals from that specific area.
Which Conditions Are Treated With Radiofrequency Ablation?
RFA can be used to help patients with chronic (long-lasting) low-back and neck pain and pain related to the degeneration of joints from arthritis.
How Long Does Pain Relief From Radiofrequency Ablation Last?
The degree of pain relief varies, depending on the cause and location of the pain. Pain relief from RFA can last from six to 12 months and in some cases, relief can last for years. More than 70% of patients treated with RFA experience pain relief.
Is Radiofrequency Ablation Safe?
RFA has proven to be a safe and effective way to treat some forms of pain. It also is generally well-tolerated, with very few associated complications. There is a slight risk of infection and bleeding at the insertion site. Your doctor can advise you about your particular risk.
What Are the Side Effects of Radiofrequency Ablation?
The main side effect of RFA is some discomfort, including swelling and bruising, at the site of the treatment, but this generally goes away after a few days.

I think I'd try everything else first for FM because of the poking part, but if I had pain from irreparable spinal damage, it would sound reasonable..
Before agreeing to have this done..I did go to WEBMD to check it out. After running the gammit of trying everything out there...(even the TENS unit)...this seemed to be a safe procedure..so I chose this route. (Feel sometimes you are ever just grabbing at straws, to find ANYTHING that will help with giving you some kind of relief from the PAIN?..guess that is where I am..)
The procedure itself is painful enough. The Doctor gives you a local in the areas of the spine where he then uses (from what I could sorta see) looks like a long flexible needle that he snakes in between vertabra, to the nerves he wants to deaden. Hooks the other end of the needle to a machine that sends electric current to the nerve ending ..and burns them. This was done under x-ray..which when he did the right side I could see.
Guess I am a little more frightened just having the left side done...it seems to be so much more painful...actually hurting So much worse than it did before having it done...and since it has been a week..I thought I would feel some kind of relief by now...instead of the pain being in certain areas in my back...and hips....it's now radiated throughout my whole left side.
JUST CALL ME FRUSTRATED!!
Thanks again to you all,
Lori
I wasn't this sensitive growing up. I was a tough athlete. I'm such a wimp about pain anymore. For me, breaking my skin causes a flare. I was dx'd with FM 17 years ago but it's only been a problem these past 5-7 years.
I would think that the abuse of your tissue along the parade route of the wire is the source of your current pain but that's my inner wimp talking.
Have you tried anything herbal? I suggest Boswellia so much, people are probably sick of it, but have you tried it?
