On the one hand, not having to pay for a doctor visit and a script, will save health care insurance money, which is a good thing, in my opinion.

Thanks for your comment. I think it is a good thing and this is why I feel this way. Most of the drugs on the market today are useless at best and at worst result in death. Sometimes even those dependant on insulin can stop taking it with a change of diet and exercise. I know of people that have been able to go off insulin by adhering to a strick diet.

I think it's a cost saving strategy but it is going to weaken doctors' powers which again I think is a good thing. The AMA has long wanted a monopoly on healthcare. This as well as other changes in the Affordable Care Act is going to further weaken doctors' power over the patient population and again I think this is a neccessary and positive change. It's going to be good for alternative healthcare providers as well.

I also believe that the ACA will significantly change the delivery of healthcare in this country.

And Jumping to the conclusion that FM drugs will liekly be OTC is not supported by the article you posted at all.

Disagree all you want it is my opinion. You're entitled to yours as well. I think we will see big changes in healthcare in this country. The status quo isn't working when chronic diseases are growing exponentially and 1 in 88 kids has autism.

This article in "NAKED CAPITALISM" is going to be bias, it is a very right wing journal. Hence, the ObamaCare comment.
The supposed diabetes meds are not injectable insulins, they are low risk drugs. Meds like presciption strenth advil are being proposed to be over the counter...etc....all are safe dosages.
They made monistat over the counter and zantac years ago, should we be concerned? At one time regular cough syrup was by presciption only too.
Further, with many things persons on disability with scripts for now over the counter drugs are still covered. Yes, they neglected to add that in the article. Only a small selected portion of the Washington journals orginal write up was in there further more.
Please read all of the acts purposed in the entirety, the effects they will have on consumers etc....don't allow articles with personal agendas make decisions for you. You could never convince me of the magical cures of diet and herbs. I have an injury that resulted in a severe neurological disorder. Not taking my nasty my meds could result in severe seizures, stroke and death. There is no magic root that can cure me, I am on the special diet and even go to the extreme of having the bacon fat that is supposed to help but without my pills controlling it, I would be dead the same as my step brother from severe seizures.
So forgive me if I find your condeming of doctors, government and every thing else.
We have fibro, currently there is not a cure. That is the fact of the matter. If there was do you not think the rest of us would have caught wind of it too.

I agree with # 4, I take an antidepressant and anti seizure drug, also lipitor and need to have my liver checked. I would not like buying these over the counter, I just don't think that would be a good thing. I also take a blood pressure pill, can't imagine never seeing a doctor, I am blessed that I just go every 6 months and I do realize people go more often but I feel like we need our doctors, I care very much for mine, been going to her since 1998 and she has helped me so much.

Personally, I think the obvious reason for moving some drugs to OTC is strictly a money thing. The pharmaceutical companies will be able to reach more people with their drugs this way and make more profits. I don't think there's any politics about it! Because this is an election year, EVERYTHING is ripe for political commentary.

There is certainly nothing new about prescriptions being moved to OTC. The first I remember it happening was about 20 yrs ago when they moved Monistat to OTC.

I was paying a $3 co-pay for it and all of a sudden it wasn't a prescription anymore and I had to pay $20 for it at the pharmacy.

The pharmaceutical industry is more profitable than the Fortune 500 companies combined. They make BIG money on name brand drugs and have the FDA in their back pocket. If they could make more money by going OTC they would do it in a heartbeat. Healthcare used to be about HEALTH CARE, in many instances now it is more about profit. Why find a cure when you can make so much more money by treating existing symptoms with drugs that create more symptoms to treat? It is a vicious cycle.

granny2 I absolutely agree. I think the reason pharma isn't going to like it is because people won't be able to afford their meds. This will further deterioate their buying power and diminish their disposable income. That's my two cents.
