But for me, I'm so hypersensitive to meds this is what I take.
Benadryl. (It's the same ingredient in ever OTC sleep aid).
And when that seems to not work as good anymore...then I switch it up for a month....and start taking 6mg of Melatonin & Magnesium. The magnesium makes me sleepy and it helps with muscle pain.
Then I go back to my benadryl.
It seems to be the only thing that has proven it'self to help me.
That and a full day of working around the house...busy schedule. I try to keep up with a good sleep hygene too.
I've also found once I stopped worrying about not sleeping the sleeping came easier and longer. At one point, i'd get no more than a couple of hours and be awake the remainder of the night.
Good luck to her and try all the suggestions that the others have listed. A cup of herbal tea and aromatic oils help too
The last article I read on sleep basically said that if pain is keeping you awake, "get rid of your pain!" LOL Yeah...if we knew how to do that we probably wouldn't be having this conversation to begin with.
I hope she can find some answers - not sleeping sucks.
I wish I could have stayed on the Amytrip...it gave me hives. And the Nortrypt gave me horrid nightmares. But then again I had some bizarre and awesome ones too. I went off of it because the nightmares were too intense and it kept me awake.
I have downloaded so Sleepy Violin Music, so I play that, while drinking some Chamomile Tea, while Laying in a Warm bath...I use Lavender Scented Epsom salts...candle light...
Make sure Fresh GOOD sheets...don't Ever use cheap sheets...I don't care if ya have to save Change to buy Good Sheets...650 & higher thread counts...A Mix of Pillows...low lights...a relaxing LIGHT Massage...not a Hard Rub down...
Thats about the Best I got...perhaps some nice slow breathing...
She frequently takes a hot bath at night and that does help. If she is going to use an electric blanket, it will have to be one that covers just her side of the bed because I tend to be warm at night and need the room a bit cooler in order to sleep well ... which may result in the two of us having to have seperate sleeping arrangements - which sucks. My favorite part of the day is waking up and cuddling with my wife for 15 minutes before our day starts.
Thanks again for all the suggestions : )
My boss recommended Melatonin to me - she said it worked great for her (she does not have Fibro 0 just sleep problems). I tried it and it did not work at all.
After a long time of getting only 2 to 3 hours of sleep a night, having to work a full-time job, and having many other helath issues, my GP put me on Neurontin (generic is Gabapentin which is what I use) and it was the first thing that has worked for me.
I am up to 1800 mg and generally can get 5 to 7 hours a night. A couple of nights on the weekends I got 7 to 9 hours! Wahoo! I started out taking 100mg and increased the amount to get the desired result. Yes I am "hung over" the next day but I need the sleep to heal.
Just one more thing ( I hate long posts but need to add this). Please read all the details about Neurontin. My doctor felt that the pain from the Fibro was involved in why I was waking up/not sleeping. This drug helps that.
I truly hope this helps you evaluate your options.
I would suggest trying ear plugs.
While I still don't get into a deep restorative sleep, I am not awakened by every little noise. From the house settling to my husband snoring, ear plugs have been my saviour!
