Morning everyone...it's a little past 2 am and I'm wide awake -_- Leo is on vacation til Tuesday I think so I figured I'd do this.
It's gonna get dangerously cold tonight, around 2 degrees with a windchill of -6 or so. Not the coldest we've had but way colder than necessary. It was 60 degrees on Monday. Go home new Hampshire, you're drunk.
You can actually get frostbite at 32 degrees or lower. Maybe because this time of year that doesn't seem that cold, but I figured it would have to be colder. That said, it depends more on how long you're exposed more than anything else. The colder the temperature, the quicker it can happen. At temperatures below 5 degrees F, the risk rises sharply. Frostbite is most common in the extremities and the face (nose and ears especially), because they have less blood flow than the rest of the body. The initial symptom is usually numbness, which can make it difficult to tell you have it. That progresses to a pins and needles and/or burning sensation. If you stay out, you're risking severe frostbite at this point, which can cause gangrene and loss of tissue.
The tl;dr is, if you feel numb or pins and needles, get your ass inside. This goes double if you have any condition that affects circulation-diabetes, raynauds, if you smoke etc. You're more prone to frostbite without adequate blood flow.
Apparently, frostbite can cause some weird stuff, even after you recover, from damage to the tissue. Ironically, it can cause hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), but also arthritis if it's deep enough to affect a joint, growth problems in kid s (if the growth plate freezes), increased risk of getting frostbite again, numbness, changes to the color/texture of the skin, and apparently tetanus? Presumably from damage to nerves but I could be wrong there.
And now I guess I should get up and start my day. I'll work on some wood burning and go for a short run before work, which is as close to self care as I can get on days I work-starting the day with things I find relaxing. If anyone was wondering what woodburning with 2 kittens looks like, here it is. And I wonder why my progress is so slow...

Live to all, heading in to dead zone
Late yesterday, it finally got warm enough here that the ice was falling off the roof, trees, wires etc. It was raining ice for about an hour. I saw quite a bit of tree damage today while I was out. My neighborhood has a lot of old trees. A couple of blocks over, several properties have large limbs and a lot of debris down.
When I lived in Northern Ontario we could have -60 degree temps with the wind chill. You learned very quickly how to manage that or plan on not surviving.
I’ve been out to see two cats today. Last night, I got a five star review from the cat dad of the Maine Coon. And, he probably wants me back in March. Waiting on him working out his travel details.
I have laundry working and have to get this place straightened up.
Waves! I will check back later.
Miki, aweeee, kitties!! Did you see my Purrfect coffee shop I found around the corner from me? I posted it on my journal a couple days back.
Ah, -2 NOT cold? HA!
No thank you! It's only 50 here today and I've got a turtleneck and jacket on. We had 90 degrees the other day. Insane weather this winter.
I am getting ready to leave for last appointment this week. A lunch appointment. oyvay. I am whopped this week. Had nightmares all night. My fatigue is off the charts. I am going to try to juice this coming week and see if that helps. Hoping it's my liver count again. "hoping" ...what a thing to hope for eh?
