After getting my teeth cleaned yesterday I decided to stop by my pharmacy and get a flu shot. The pharmacist put the shot way too high up . I wasn't looking because of my needle phobia and was trying to go to my happy place in my head. And yes , I was a nurse for almost 20 years before fibro knocked me off my feet and I gave hundreds of shots including flu shots but I have a needle phobia if the needle is going into me.
Now I have pain from my shoulder down my whole arm and numbness and tingling in my fingers and no I am not having a heart attack. I got the shot in my right arm because I am left handed. I can't sleep ever on my left side because of hip and leg pain on that side and can't sleep on my back ever either because of pain so I always sleep on my right side which I can't do because my right arm is so painful from the shot - so I have been awake all night.
I tried Tylenol for the pain earlier tonight but didn't help , so I took one of my Percocets recently. I can't take anti inflammatory meds because of my stomach problems. I am also trying ice to the area. I tried heat first but it didn't help. I have had soreness from flu shots in the past but this is ridiculous. I will never again get a flu shot at a pharmacy. It really isn't that hard to give a shot in the deltoid muscle properly - stupid pharmacist.

And yeah, it's not exactly rocket science to do an IM on a muscle like the delt, even I can do it, and that's just b/c I had to help my dad when he had cancer.

There is only one person I will let near me with a needle, not due to phobia, but skill and that is the nurse at my doctor's office.

I've had some doozies in the past also. I now go to my kiddos pediatricians office. They offer it to the entire family. I don't know if it is because they have smaller equipment or that they just are better trained, but I've never walked away hurting when I get them there.
So what should help if one has a sore arm from the flu shot? Like you said, heat/icing etc isn't helping.

Last time I got a flu shot I was sick within 2 hrs with the flu and ended up with pneumonia so I won't be getting a flu shot ever again, but don't have a problem getting a pneumonia shot every 5 yrs.
I honestly don't think it's training so much as caring. If they take it seriously they'll pay attention and make sure it's done right. My pharmacist even warmed the syringe between her hands for a minute because she said it would hurt less if the vaccine wasn't so cold - and she was right.
