So I broke up with my ex in January after a long saga of hostility and lack of support. I posted about it around that time. Six days later he lost his job, and he moved in with his dad/dad's gf while I stayed in our condo. The rent is expensive and I'm struggling to pay it; I have to stick it out until the fall when my lease is up. Since then he has all but begged me to get back together, and thought that because I was being civil there was a chance of getting back together. Not once did I say anything of the sort, in fact I made it abundantly clear that I would not be doing this again, but that didn't stop him from asking if we could "talk" over and over. Just a couple weeks ago I think I finally got through.
The point of this post is more of a moral dilemma. This week he has texted me several times (apologies, mostly, which usually means he's testing the waters), then on Wednesday he asked me if I needed help with the rent money. I told him I'm kind of broke but should be in better shape now that it's warming up and I'm not spending as much on heat, so no need. I don't think he's working but don't know for sure. So today I check the mail and there's a check from him for $1000. I'm planning on buying a house at the end of the summer if I can find one I can afford, but even an inexpensive house will decimate my savings and I may need to borrow from my parents (I plan to pay them back for anything I might need to borrow), so obviously I can use any financial help I can get. But at the same time I almost feel like it's "tainted" money, money I have no right to. My best friend says I should just take it because I supported him single handedly for over a year. What do you guys think-should I deposit the check or tear it up??

You also may want to talk to an attorney because with his name still being on the lease, even though it is the landlord and not you that is holding up getting his name off, he still has legal rights to where you're living. Even though the check doesn't say anything about it being for rent. It is possible that he could take you to court and tell the Judge that he sent you money for his part of the rent. I'm not saying what he could tell a Judge would be true, I'm just saying that you need to protect yourself in everyway possible.
