It has been one year since my traumatic experience with the tooth that couldn't be saved. Since I was tortured with 3 root canals that just made the pain worse. Since I gave up and said "TAKE IT OUT!!"
I have a hole in my mouth, but at least it doesn't hurt. It took 6 months to get to that point.
WHY can't dentists (all of them, specialists or not) take it seriously when I say I have Fibromyalgia and my pain responses are DIFFERENT !?!
I had my "normal" checkup yesterday. I had to have a filling. I said, please do it while I'm here, because it's hard for me to go anywhere twice.
Then I tried to tell the dentist that I react differently to the anesthetic. I said I have a delayed reaction. I need more time to be numb. He just about laughed in my face. Said, "Trust me, I know what I'm doing!"
Wasn't that something a character on a comedy TV show said right before he screwed everything up?
I guess the dentist wanted to go to lunch because he wanted to start working on me almost immediately. I insisted,"We need to wait. I'm not numb yet."
He said, "What makes you think you're not numb?" Can you believe that question? Like I don't know ?!?
I j ust said again, "I'm not numb. We are waiting at least 5 more minutes."
Well, the anesthetic kicked in about 10 minutes later, and I said I was ready. I didn't feel pain.
Until later. Of course my face swelled up 2 hours AFTER I left the dentist. I was also loopy from the local anesthetic, something they don't understand either.
When the numbness wore off, I was in pain. Not from the tooth, but from the spot where the needle went into my gums. Had to take painkiller for 2 days.
And, of course, every other tooth in my head seemed to be screaming that it needed a root canal. Referred pain. Something else they don't get. My whole head throbbed.
And this was just a filling!
Going to the dentist is a nightmare with fibro. Even though we all react differently to things, I'll bet I'm not alone in this.
This latest dentist is about the 10th one I've had in 10 years in this state. Florida is known for horrible dentists and horrible mill practice primary care doctors. I'm running out of names to try from my insurance providers.
Oh, and I've been warned that I need to fill the space in my mouth where the molar was because the other teeth will collapse in on themselves. After being told about all kinds of expensive dentures and bridework, I finally found out about a 'removable tooth' that should prevent the problem. It's not that expensive. I am opting for that because I know I'd be in constant pain from any implant.
I know myself, dammit! I would be in constant pain from anything permanent. Removable? Sounds better. And it's the least expensive. We'll see. I'm not up to doing it for at least another 6 months.

I don't know how I got so lucky to find a dentist that has Fibro. I've never been treated so well in a dentist office. They even massage my neck and jaw after any procedure and give me a warm padded pillow to lay my head on.
Sometimes I'm a little afraid of the dentist still because I know she is in a lot of pain herself and can be a little snappy. I wouldn't want her to snap with a drill in her hand. LOL
