Why is this medication prescribed?

Celecoxib is used to relieve pain, tenderness, swelling and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis (arthritis caused by a breakdown of the lining of the joints), rheumatoid arthritis (arthritis caused by swelling of the lining of the joints), and ankylosing spondylitis (arthritis that mainly affects the spine). Celecoxib is also used to treat painful menstrual periods and pain from other causes. It is also used with surgery and other treatments to reduce the number of polyps (abnormal growths) in the colon (large intestine) and rectum in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (a condition in which hundreds or thousands of polyps form in the colon and cancer may develop). Celecoxib is in a class of NSAIDs called COX-2 inhibitors. It works by stopping the body's production of a substance that causes pain and inflammation.

My husband was given samples but we tried to get a script filled the insurance company said Nay Nay, that you have to have tried three genric drugs first he is trying Mobic Fow for Achilles Tendonitis, but I do not think it is a cox-2 but a cox- 1?

COX-2 inhibitors were discovered later, as a healthier, more targeted way of treating the inflammation without the side effects. This makes sense as COX-2 is found more commonly in inflammatory and immune cells than COX-1 drugs, which exist throughout the body. Unfortunately, this would prove to be far, far from the truth. While COX-2 is more specific to inflammation, the side effects can be worse than COX-1 drugs.

I am so happy that it is helping you to feel better!!! And, I feel that out of all the drugs out there, it is one of the safer ones. The next step up would be plaquenil. So, I hope that the NSAID works for you for a long time! This has made my day!!! Thank you so much for sharing! Oh and btw, it helped me for several years too!!!

My dad takes Celebrex and it works well for him and he has fibro. Unfortunately since he's able to take it, he thinks I should be able to also and doesn't understand why I still struggle with pain :/

Celebrex is a sulfa drug, so if you are allergic to any other sulfa drugs, like bactrim, then you can't take Celebrex. I can't take it because it is a sulfa drug and I have a sulfa allergy.

But if you're not allergic and it works - hey you should keep taking it!

I have used Celebrex and Really Liked It..but my Dr. Pulled me back off for some reason...said this was Not the Med for me..I Argued cause it actually HELPRD me...he just said No..after that for awhile you could not get it, then it was available again...but was never put back on...NSAIDS Have Always brought me Relief..yet they Tore up my Guts in the End...so perhaps he knew something I did not know a LONG Time ago !

I am allergic to sulfa drugs - that might explain the slight itching that has come up. Darn.

I was wearing a huge allergy bracelet and it is in the system.

I haven't broken out in a big rash, but anything that touches sweat has broken out.

I take Mobic - I was on Vioxx before they pulled it off the market, and it was my wonder drug. It took ALL of my pain away. Celebrex didn't do as well for me so we switched to Mobic. There were originally four Cox2 inhibitor NSAIDS - Vioxx, Celebrex, Celexa, and Mobic. Celebrex and Mobic are still available - the other two were pulled about six years ago.

People forget than NSAIDS are not just anti-inflammatory - they are also analgesic. Aspirin is a NSAID and nobody thinks twice if you take that for a headache - somehow when the created the "class" and started saying "anti-inflammatory" people got the idea that this is all they do - not so.

Hope it continues to work for you. FYI, Mobic has a generic - which is the other reason I take it instead of Celebrex.
