I believe from all of the observatios I've made over the years about addiction that addicts are primarily medicating emotional pain.
I(, personally, have been prescribed every kind of pharmacutical opioid, and "I" have never become addictded to the drugs. My body was habituated to Morphine, because I took it so long. And there have been other drugs that I had to titrate down before going completely off of them.
In this persons case, who knows what darkenss lies inside her mind, and what other distractions might have led her to further her mental detachment from her actions.
So, that being said, we go back to prior disposition toward addiction through genetics; addiction caused by emotional pain and addiction that is a secondary affect of a drug.
Maybe we could widen the conversaton toward the definition of "depression". This word is widely used to describe a myrid of symptoms, both mental, emotional and physical.
Af far as the computer goes, I think it can become an addiction, because it is good at distracting us from our current issues. If you think you are addicted, ask yourself the same questions that are asked by AA regarding alchohol. If they don't fit for you, don't worry about it.
This is written with the editorial "You". Not personal.
And you are right...Anyone who can do something so awful must indeed have some horrible demons/ demented mind!
Another intresting point you made is depression being genetic. Is it? How much so? Could depression be caused by things like trauma, abuse, bad health, etc.? how much of it is really genetics v/s 'Caused' (for lack of word)
Thanks patty
Depression can be found as a primary illness in generations of families. This is "melancholia". Abraham Lincoln had the illness. We call this "clinical depression" in this age. "This depression can hit like an illness. It is rated from
'minor' to 'major' and its duration is indeterminate, but generally lasts no less than 6 months in duration.
Situational depression is more the result of life happening in an unpleasant, unrelenting and repetitious way. Or by sudden loss. This depression lasts as long as the situation stays the same.
I have been trying to learn about my own tendency to fall into depressed periods through out my life. In studying the dis-ease, I have boiled it down in this way.
There are 1 million, more or less, ways to describe this. And about 4 thereputical methods to work with it.
Anytime you want to chat, I'm here for any of you. I have a special interest in depression, but I cannot go to the depression page because they are so depressing.!
I think my major depression and alcoholism is genetic because it is all through my family. My son also has both and the onset was puberty just like me. I'm so glad we live in an age where depression is treatable.
I know you mean PattyD about the depression page being too depressing! I find the same thing. Of course mine is under control with medication.
Other then antidepressants and total abstinence from alcohol I have no control over my alcoholism or depression. It isn't something I can manage.
Hugs, Keleee :)

As far as addictions go, we all have them in one form or another. And honestly they can all have a good and bad spin on them. However, if the addiction causes detrimental harm to yourself and especially to others i.e alcoholisim...drunk driving etc etc. Then yes it is something that needs to stop. However, there are ones that don't harm anyone except the person who is doing it i.e eating too much. Now these addictions are not horrible but they aren't good because they can lead to serious health issues etc. The difference is when these addictions make a person harm someone else intentionally is when it is bad. Everyone of us has the ability to stop or to moderate our use of our addictions.
As far as depression goes, there has been research among research that if a person comes from a family with depression their chances of being predisposed to it is significantly higher. Although it is not a requirement, depression can be triggered from horrible traumas in the past or imbalances in the brain or hormones etc. Kinda reminds me of how FM gets started. The thing is there are alot of stigmas faced with people who are diagnosed as depressed. Especially in the medical community, their words are no longer credible due to this mental illness they can not control. I think alot of people want to believe they can over come it. We are as a whole a strong and proud species. Some don't have the money or means to get medical treatment. But it is seriously needs to be changed around because it can really be a detriment to someone mentally and emotionally that could end up being a physical harm situation whether to themselves or others. I think more research needs to be done. I know they have studied alot but I feel there are alot of areas about depression thought patterns etc that are misunderstood and untouched by the medical community and the world at large. Because we are not only influenced by our chemical balances but things people have said and done to us that has ingrained itself within us that drives us in ways we aren't even concious of.In order to completey treat the persno you have to understand the whole picture not just one section, a holistic approach.
It is sad that a mother would kill her own child. I dont know anything about this story but I know given my current situation I cant read this story or it will drag up my issues.
Thanks for the post. Very thought provoking.
