I've been doing yoga at home all winter (week 17) on the Wii Fit Plus system. It has been a godsend for me. The yoga classes in town I live are $20 per lesson for an hour so that would quickly add up to the cost of this system. And I can learn in my home and not look a fool in a class full of others :/ I started slow 5-10 minutes a day, beginner poses and have gradually worked up to a half an hour of yoga, 10 mins cardio, and 10 strength training. Just proceed slowwwwwly.I still use a chair in front of me for some poses because my balance is so bad. I have cut my pain meds in half just by doing this small amount of exercise daily. Hope you find a class or try the Wii and it is beneficial to you. Gentle fibro (huggs) AB
I only go once a week for an hour and I'm still on the beginner class. I am WORN OUT when I am done but the next day I feel great. I've noticed less trigger points and tender points and even though I've only gone to maybe 6 classes my flexibility has improved a lot!
Make sure the teacher knows you have fibro. If they're not understanding then you should not take their class. The lady who teaches mine understands the fibro and she goes out of her way to show me alternatives to some poses that I can't do yet.
My physical therapists say yoga is one of the best things we can do with the fibro. It's the benefit of stretching combined with strength training. Definitely start in the beginning class though because yoga is INTENSE! Be prepared to be sore the first couple of times and don't do something if it hurts. They say yoga isn't supposed to hurt at all but honestly every time I move it hurts so I just avoid the type of pain I know will cause me even more problems later if that makes any sense.
AngrBoda, it was due to your goal setting and REACHING with the WII fit that I got it. My youngest dd is loving it but I have yet to find the time to give it! I do have a critter (Mii) now, and plan to try it out SOON and get into a routine habit. You really have done so well!!
it gives me more spoons a day, so to speak :)
My advice..Definitely start with a basic class as the others said, let the instructor know about your condition, and drink a lot of water. Don't try to compete with the others in the class and don't push yourself. Do what you can and don't feel bad if you have to stop and go into "child's pose".
You will be sore the first few times and then you will really start to feel the positive effects.
Good luck and have fun!
