Family Issues Support Group
Family issues is a huge range that go from minor conflict to major misbehaviour and even abuse on the part of individual members of the family occur. Whether you feel you are in a dysfunctional family or you're dealing with a very specific issue, this is the place to talk about it and find others who might be going through the same thing.
This is about my Mom and brother. He and his wife and son live w/ her (which has nothing to do with what I'm I about to say). I have always had a close relationship w/ my Mom over the years. With my brother ...not the greatest. I always felt growing up that he hated me....and I honestly don't know why. In recent years however, he seemed to have changed for the better in a lot of ways. Anyway, today I was shocked to hear from my Mom that my brother had a pretty serious health scare last week, and no one told me! What happened is that he temporarily lost his sight. I think it was for more than a few minutes too! He had some tests, and some of the obvious things that could be really bad have been ruled out ...which is great. What I can't believe, what I am totally BLOWN AWAY by is that no one told me!!! She had indicated to me many times before that they don't always like to talk about too many personal things on the phone because "all of our calls are being recorded" ...which unfortunately, is true. I tell my Mom a lot about my problems over the phone. For ex., I would tell her if someone here was ill, or if I had a problem at the dentist ...or even if something an acquaintance said rubbed me the wrong way. Also I have a teenage daughter who is disabled, and sometimes I talk to her about our struggles with her. Recorded or not, I have the need to share what goes on in my life w/ my Mom, and occasionally with my brother. "He said not to tell you because he didn't want to worry you!" What?????!!!!! Bull sh*# !!!!!! And she never stopped to think that maybe it was wrong not a to tell me??? Oh, so I guess I shouldn't tell them what goes on here, about any illnesses or health problems or anything?!!!!! "There's nothing you could have done anyway". Really? Well, no sh*# ! There's nothing they can do about my daughter's disability either, so I guess I shouldn't be bothering them w/ my problems!!!!! My parents have been divorced for many years. My father didn't really treat us very well growing up ...so he is kind of on the outside, but for a reason. Now I feel like I AM TOO ...and for what??? What have I done???!!! I have always been the one to reach out and be thoughtful. Now my Mom says that I'm "playing games" because I don't answer when she calls. When someone is this rude / hurtful and then tells me I shouldn't be hurt, THAT is a game!!! I can't even imagine having a problem where anyone here had a problem anything close to my brother's and not telling them -at least the next morning. I can't even IMAGINE it. Wow. I must be having a bad dream. I guess my biggest problems are that I don't have any friends, and always relied on my Mom for friendship and assumed for a while that my brother actually cared. I am so mad right now that I told my husband they can just think of me as dead.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

I’m sorry to hear about your brother. I pray for his healing and things will get better in your family relationship. Please keep us posted, God bless.
Maybe he said not to say anything because you already have a lot on your plate..... I would try to not make this about you be pushed away …. I don't think from what I've read that's what it is
I understand your reaction however you mom was simply honouring your brother's request as I imagine she'd honour yours if you asked her to keep something private
Perhaps until he had answers he didn't want you to simply worry..... Gentle hug... I hope that the family can mend... it reads like you love one another a lot and that's special.....xo
I hope that you excuse your own feelings right now and allow yourself to get through this transition of disappointment with your family while doing so with peaceful understanding. True it is that keeping secrets is not always a good decision. But no family will be able to get through hard times without the care and prayers of other loved ones, which is most likely why you were clued in after your brother had a good idea of what the complications to his illness details. I don't believe that this was intended to insult or hurt you. Sorry for that. Though I imagine he was holding out for more information to tell you, in order that your own wisdom and strength could influence a positive hope in his healing process.
I do hope the best for all of you. Much love to you.
