Totally within her rights not to pledge. Those parents should be ashamed. Do NOT let this go. Suspending her is illegal. A quick google and you'll find information. The school should know better, unless that's not the real reason and your sister's stretching the truth. Maybe she was insubordinate and inappropriate?

No we talked to the teacher and she just said that my sister was just sitting there and said that she wouldn't pledge allegiance to anyone when she was asked why she wouldn't stand up.

I have respect for both sides and it was handled very well when I was in public school. We had a young girl who was a Jehovah's Witness in our home room (we had other Jevhovah's Witnesses in our school too) first thing in the morning and she would always leave the room and WAIT OUT IN THE HALL for the National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance. She told me she felt it to be a respectful way of having her objection, but not putting her objection in everyone's face, and yet allowing those who did want to stand for the National Anthem and pledge, to do it without any distraction or interruption. WHAT AN EXCELLENT AND RESPECTFUL WAY TO HANDLE THIS.

I think standing out in the hallway is a lot more distracting and calling attention to one's self. Why not just stand and not say the pledge. That's what I do. It's not an issue AT ALL at our school. I think the pledge is considered pass by many these days.

It's just a bunch of 1950's propaganda, anyway.

Is she doing this to cause a stir and draw attention?
Is she doing it because she has some deep seeted belief about honoring the country that gives her freedoms?

I imagine the reasons matter a great deal.
If she uses this to be obstinate, then discipline may help her differentiate between taking a stand Ans standing up for what is right.

The biggest issues may be that this is more a sending for.more difficulties in refusing to obey teachers thru the day.
There is danger in not obeying say for instance in a crisis likefire or a gun threat or tornado something like that.

Be sure she is actually standing for something rather than inflicting her will just because she can.

Just the fact that she CAN choose not to say the pledge makes this country so great. It shouldn't matter why she abstains- she has that right. She shouldn't be forced to explain why.

I'd print this out and slap it on the principal's desk. I'd also demand a meeting with those parents to make sure their ignorant remarks stop.

In trying to discuss the situation here, I don't think getting into The Pledge itself and calling it propaganda is helpful.

I do believe your parents should speak with your sister and find out what is happening. If her leg or foot hurts or if a boyfriend stomped her foot to purposely hurt her and she's not talking about it and that is why she isn't standing, then your Mom needs to talk to her, get to the root of it and get her treatment.

If she has a belief from a religion or group that does not allow for her to stand for The Pledge, then your mom should discuss and learn her belief and all together decide what will be done.

I saw a decision in FRAZIER that allowed parents to make the decision on children being exempted from The Pledge in schools. This was in Florida but was from a Federal Appeals Court and that carries weight in others states. I see in quickly looking that various states have some schools require permission slips to have a child participate in the Pledge, others want permission slips to not participate in the Pledge, while others allow either (1)a student to not want to participate or (2) a parent stating that the child should not participate.

I think your Mom should do a quick check also on the school as to what they require for someone to opt out of the Pledge. Maybe your sister didn't opt out correctly.

Okay so It's worst we are getting her out of the school. We got access to the security tape she didn't accept to do the pledge (wich we have decided she has the right to do whatever she wants in regards of political and religious aspects) not only the teacher slapped her across the face as she incited the other kids to bully her.
If people are closing their eyes to this we are going public. I won't rest untill they get rid of both the teacher and that fucker principal who watched the tape before us and still decided to suspend her.

Hi Camile: I'm so sorry that your sister was hit. That's so bad and there's no excuse for that. If you are thinking of proceeding legally, look for a civil rights attorney. The ACLU is very particular about cases they take and typically only take ones that will end up hitting big in the newspapers.
