I know this common, I know I am not the first person to ever despise their mother in law. So let me give you some background and then ask your advice on how to deal with this. I do not want to sound petty but sometimes the best advice is from a stranger.
First things first, my husband's mother is the typical mother in law in most ways, smile in your face, talk behind your back, calls nonstop, meddles in your business, etc. She constantly insults me in the open or just interrupts anything I say to begin talking about herself. i.e. I told her a family member passed away and she began to talk about what she was going to eat (& yes she heard me). That I can learn to ignore, because my husband knows she is a heartless person & it does not affect the type of heart we have. It is the emotional scars she has caused my husband that make me despise her. I am not a hateful person and find love for everyone in my heart but I just cannot seem to shake these feelings... Please help me, help him. I need guidance...
I could write a book about the pain she's caused in my 7 years of knowing her but I will just summarize. He is one of 4 children. He is the 2nd oldest. The oldest is a repeat felon who is a violent drug-addict. Ever since by husband was a child he has charges from attempted murder to countless drug & assault charges. No matter what the case is, his mother bailed him out. Even if it meant the lights got cut off. They even went bankrupt to settle a lawsuit made against them by a girl whom he paralyzed in an accident. On other occasions she stole money from my husband to send his brother money in jail which ultimately led to the repossession of my husband's truck. He grew up seeing her bring countless men into the house behind his father's back. He grew up being her crutch listening to her talk about leaving his dad, how she could not afford to pay the bills. He was a child & he listened and carried her burdens. As a teenager, he helped pay the bills. He sat through Christmases where the younger children had many boxes under the tree, but nothing for him because "he was 13 now, & his younger siblings deserved nice Christmases"
She has since left his father to be with a married man with money. She now tries to continue to ask my husband to carry her places and do for her...He is grown, we live almost an hour away and he has his own burdens but she tries to buy him and disguise her motives and guilt-trip him with phone calls and sweet messages. When he does not respond she then tries to call and message me. I do not feel that it is my place to say anything but I continue to watch him hurt for a mother he never had....what do I do? my heart hearts. I hate her for the pain she has caused him...
It is his mother, I can not honestly tell him to rid her out of our life but she is toxic... I have encouraged him to talk to her on several occasions but he knows she will not change, so he continues to take her calls & answer her whims....

Do you think having anxiety could lead into depression? What are your thoughts?

I will say though that anyone that treats you rudely only does so because you continue to allow it. Stand your ground in any conversations with her, if she interrupts you, then interrupt her and let her know that she just cut you off in conversation, could you please continue. She's a verbally and emotionally abusive person that's allowed to get away with bad behavior. Because your husband accepts it, doesn't mean you have to. Perhaps in time if he see you correct her on bad behavior, it may give him the confidence to do so also.
I would talk to him and tell him that you will no longer put up with her poor behavior and if she is rude to you in the future, you will address it each and every time.
My MIL was the same way. I took it for so many years it was ridiculous. I felt like a jelly fish, NO spine! I finally decided I'd had enough and confronted her each and every time she acted up, which was often. I never let up on her. It caused a few arguments between my husband and I because he didn't want the confrontations in the family but TOO BAD was my response! Eventually, she stopped. Verbal bullies are great coming out of the gate but you'll often find they have no long term stamina...
He is a grown man and as horrible as you "think" she is... you know things that made him sad in his younger years because he vented them to you.. but you shouldn't play the role of the devil now and keep reminding him of her shortcomings in hopes that he will benefit your wants and kick her out of his life... cause as many bad qualities as she has she also has good qualities and she is his Mother. To want him to only remember the bad parts of her so you can be free of her would be doing him a huge disservice.
I agree. manage your conversations with her just like you would anyone else. " Excuse, me Mary... Did you not just hear me tell you that someone died in my family"??
Even though you're married you and your husband have separate relationships with his Mother. when she calls. hum a happy little tune and go into another room.
I can somewhat relate to your situation. I have a sister in law who hates me and has even whispered lies about me into my husband's ear to cause problems in our marriage. I used to raise a ruckus, but finally learned to let her be in charge of all the hate and I'll be in charge of feeling sorry for her now instead of considering her a threat. It's very freeing to let go of trying to control situations and concentrate on positive things, let it go and be peaceful.
Only he can decide the relationship he wants to have with his mother. And you are totally within your right to say you want nothing to do with her.
I'd work, instead on your own boundaries- if your DH wants to keep her in his life, then so be it. But you shouldn't have to deal with it.
Maybe hop over onto the codependency board?
Hugs.
If your husband discusses these things with you I would be honest with feedback...And if you aren't comfortable around her you could most definitely have some boundaries in place... I think this type of relationship needs some boundaries ... She does 'sound' as though she's narcissistic and those types of personalities can really suck the life out of you... Big hug...x
