What was the compliment? And why did you feel the need to share it with your mom? I mean, I get compliments from time to time, but I generally don't come home and tell my kids that so-and-so really liked me.

IDK, this sort of thing is hard to comment on over the internet because 95% of language is in HOW something is said, rather than in what is said. Without knowing how it was said, it's hard to offer any ideas.

Is there anything that you and your mom enjoy doing together? I'd look more in that direction...build up on positives, if possible.

have you told your mother that you feel she is being rude and how hurtful it is? If she is not willing to discuss it with you and if you suggest going to counseling together and she rejects that, then perhaps it's time to start setting some healthy boundaries.

Do you live at home with her?

I agree with talking with your mom on your own about these things and see if you can have a positive dialogue with her

Perhaps give her examples and I wouldn't say 'you' made me feel .. placing blame however I would say "I felt"... It can make the conversation go a lot smoother when blame isn't involved... Big hug...x

Thank you all for your replies, I talked to my mom and found out she was just being sarcastic but I didn't catch the sarcasm because what she calls sarcasm sounds more like criticism. I grew up with a very judgemental family and to this day it drives me nuts and I strive to not be like them. Since I won't conform to their standards they like to belittle me, it just gets old and tiring.

I agree with sound cloud, when talking to someone, especially family you have to say things like: "I" felt this way or that way when certain things happened. I had made an mistake one time when I was talking with one of my brothers. I told him that after mom spoke with him on the phone (a day later, and this was about three years ago). I said to him "after you spoke with mom, she began feeling bad......" then he got real upset with me. He talked real fast then hung up on me. I was hurt that morning because I was not implying anything to him, as I was only trying to strike up a conversation with him but he took it the wrong way.

After reading the last post from you, I'm glad that things had been cleared.
