So I'm 15 and I've had many different friends online since I was 13. I've gotten in trouble with a group of friends almost 2 years ago. I was Skyping an online friend my mom actually knew about. She asked who I was talking to and I told her my friend nick. She said she didn't know him and got pissed. She kept saying "I don't like you talking to this Nick guy" and kept asking questions about him, she already listens on my conversations and hides outside of my door. I don't have many friends in school so my online friends are my closest people. Not only this, she obviously thinks I'm sending nudes to people and am telling people my address. She asks me if I send out naked pictures of me. Which is a dumb thing to ask. She doesn't trust me. My brother made internet friends she knew about when he was my age but it's a big problem for me to have a few Internet friends? A lot of my internet friends don't even know my real name. Also it's annoying that my internet friends have to be girls! It's sexist af. But she doesn't know that Nick is transgender. She's legit met all my girl online friends and was okay with it but if I mention a guy friend he's instantly a pedophile?! How do I deal with this? She's a fucking bitch so I know if I try to talk to her about this problem she'll just lecture me about the Internet. I KNOW PEOPLE CAN TRACK YOUR LOCATION THATS WHY I HAVE A VPN INSTALLED! I don't know what to do I'm scared my moms going to take away my only escape from this unclean, unsafe house with her asshole boyfriend and her being an alcoholic.

Do you think having anxiety could lead into depression? What are your thoughts?

I understand you think you have e VC everything handled and in control. After all you sound like a bright girl .
When dealing with the internet and some of the fake, lying predators out there, smart women a lot older and more experienced than you get conned and killed every day. Every single day.
I didn't get along with my mother either. I'm just saying you deserve to have your friends, and you deserve to have a nosey mother who's trying to protect her child from the absolute crap that's floating around out there
I would imagine being transgender might make him feel isolated.
Maybe he's a 55 year old creep looking to play on a young girls sympathies because he's a pervert still living in his mother's basement.
I'm sure you've seen "Catfish". Happens all the time. Your mother just wants to make sure those sickos don't get a hold of her daughter.
I understand wanting internet friends... I have met some wonderful friends here on DS
You are a 15 year old girl and as frustrating as it may be at times your mom loves you and she knows that not everyone out in the world are good people
I'm a moderator on DS and although I can't and wouldn't talk about anyone on this site ClearDay is absolutely right... There are people who are not who they claim to be and they can be really slick about it
Big hug for you....xo
I get this from both sides.
Safety...is important. Learning how to be "street smart" isn't something that magically just happens. It's a learning process...a skill.
Ideally, parents slowly teach it to their kids, watching over them as they learn to look before crossing the street, learn how to talk to strangers (yes...talking to strangers is a KEY skill), and learn how to be online.
BUT...that's not always the way it goes. Crappy advice tells parents to tell their kids not to talk to strangers (umm, who saved Elizabeth Smart...a stranger. And that's who saves most kids that are abducted.) And parents who are on drugs/ alcohol...just aren't "there" for their kids.
SO...is your mom right? Short answer...I don't know.
I used to say that I'd never let my kids chat online...then I had kids in the 21st Century...and my son does Skype with online friends/ "strangers".
That said, there are times I've said "no", meant no, and that was the end of it. Was I right? IDK. Was I wrong? IDK. But someone has to make the decision, it sure isn't easy...and I made it.
How do you deal? Find other outlets. Find other people to chat with online. Read. Go to the library (yeah, there are good and bad people there too...but there are also good people to turn to there). Join a after school club...or start your own.
Study...yeah...I get that. Another adult saying something stupid. But I'm studying myself. I was the only adult in HersheyPark walking around with flashcards and doing them on the rides. Studying is your ticket out. Sucks like hell, but it's worth it 5 years from now.
Last, I'm going to say I'm really really sorry about your mom and her boyfriend. I haven't dated since the divorce because I didn't want to do that to my kids.
