Good Thanksgiving without Inlaws

For the first time since my husband and I've been together (8 years of marriage), we didn't go to my MIL's for a major holiday. We had a lovely day with just hubby, myself, and our 2 kids. Plus, our daughter wasn't stressed with her autism and the large group at my MIL's. I'm very proud that my husband stood up to his mother and 2 sisters (the girls threw a fit because mommy told them a bunch of lies about us hating their kids which is a complete lie). It was the first holiday I've enjoyed in many years. I'm hoping that this continues in the form of boundaries we set being followed. We are debating going over for a Christmas dinner...it will depend alot on how his family behaves (or doesn't) in the next month. Hubby says he doesn't want to commit until closer to the date. I NEVER thought this would happen. I'm very grateful.

I guess hubby's family just can't accept our boundaries. His sister texted him and asked if he even was going to allow our children in the grandkid gift drawing exchange. Husband kept his poise and texted back yes please. I would have said don't your kids do the exchange even when you visit your husband's family over Thanksgiving? Just because we choose to stay home and not celebrate with either side doesn't mean the children should suffer. Me personally, I hope my inlaws start behaving for my husband's sake. If they don't, they are jeopardizing a family Christmas. My husband's brother hasn't been home in 3 years (he was smart enough to leave over 12 years ago) and announced he will be home one night for a family dinner. His wife (whom is treated terribly by my MIL and her daughters) is even coming. Really hope my MIL realizes who will be suffering (her) on Christmas if she doesn't behave and tell her little puppets (her daughters) to do the same. **SIGH**

Sounds familiar. It is hard to stand up to MIL....I too have two SIL puppets. The truth is, we avoided Thanksgiving this year (after 32 yrs. of marriage)---and plan to avoid Christmas too. More Jerry Springer like drama than I care to get into....but I think it is best for all.
I am personally upset about the situation but can handle it...but for them to avoid my son (their grandson and nephew) and my husband is beyond offensive.
Best to protect yourself and just take the high road like you are doing, They may not like it but they will get the message---just like your brother in law---just stopping in for a dinner around the holiday--He set the parameters didn't he?
