Family issues is a huge range that go from minor conflict to major misbehaviour and even abuse on the part of individual members of the family occur. Ok, I found out today that my Mil has a hip that was replaced about 2 years ago that has slipped out of place. It will need to be replaced via surgery ASAP. Because it is more complicated than just putting one in, she has to go 4 hours away to a major city (the one she had done was done locally...she's also had a shoulder, wrist, and knee replaced with no troubles locally).
So, my first reaction was thank God! It means she will be gone from work (ie. hubby and me) for at least 3 months (this includes her recovery time and everything). I feel bad she's going through this, but with the hell she's bestowed on hubby and me...well, it's hard not to feel this way.
How can I possibly feel so relieved and even happy at another person's suffering? I'm usually such a caring and empathetic person.

I can understand why you would feel guilty about your feelings.
Your own son is years away from having a wife and family... when that time comes at least you'll know what kind of Mother in law you want to be, right? You'll know to give your future daughter in law lots of space when your son belongs to her!
