Family & Friends of Cancer Patients Support Group
This community is dedicated to parents, siblings, grandparents, other relatives, friends and caretakers of cancer patients. It's difficult to find a safe place to talk about caring for a loved one with cancer, and so this group serves as an open forum to foster positivity and support for those going through this tough time.
My dad is my best friend too. He is in stage four and every day is a blessing but also cancer makes each day a curse.
You are not alone.
Much love.
My husband just died about 2 1/2 weeks ago of cancer, age 72. I hear you about what is happening with your father, and I hate cancer, too. I realize you haven't mentioned whether your friend was on hospice, but I hope that your father will have as good an experience with hospice as my husband did. The hospice people told me that many of their patients live a long time, and I definitely think the experience is much better than being in a hospital. If I ever have advanced cancer, I will let my family know I want hospice.
Blessings, Pam
Three months ago this year, I had lost my dad because of cancer. In 2014 he had surgery on his stomach to remove cancer. Since then he had been okay but he had to visit the doctor a lot so they could keep an eye on his stomach and make sure that the cancer did not return. Easter of this year I called him to wish him Happy Easter but he was ill, (it was on a Sunday). I called my cousin who lives minutes from dad. I asked him about my dad, he said that my dad was in the hospital. On Easter, he was coming down the stairs in his home, he passed out on the floor by a table that holds the phone. My cousin said that he had to call the paramedics. My dad had to be in the hospital for one week, when he was discharged from the hospital, he went to stay with another cousin; a few days later he had to return back to the hospital where he was in there for a week. While he was in the hospital, the doctor came in to tell him that there is nothing else they could do for him because the cancer had spread throughout his body. I had called dad when he was a patient in the hospital. I talked with him but he was only able to talk for a few minutes. His plan when he was discharged from the hospital was to go back to my cousin's home, sit on the porch rocking in a chair. At night time I would call him before he went to bed.
The last time I had spoke to dad was Saturday June 26 around a little after 10:00 am while my mom was seeing the doctor for pain in her back. He asked did mom want to speak with him and I said no because she was not available. At home that evening I was laughing and talking with my sister in law. I did not expect the would be waiting for me in the morning. In the morning I found my cell phone and connect it up. I noticed that my cousin called me at 5:44 am to tell me that my dad had died. I told my mom then I called a friend. I told the friend how I felt the moment I learned of the news. I felt lost, numb, tears, and could not believe this was happening to me.
Whenever I hear the word hospice it bothers me a lot, I do not have anything negative to say about hospice but do not want to hear anything about it. It reminds me of death.
I had lost three friends because of cancer. A next door neighbor, a friend from church and a friend who owned a business. Her and her spouse owned a store for a long time. I feel that there is no one else in our lives because we had lost someone one way or the other, some died from cancer and the others moved away. Our lives is not the same now like it used to be. So much had changed.
