I read the thread in the Crisis Center.

One thing that it never mentioned is if you called the police. He strangled you, he smashed his head into you, and he punched you in the gut hard.

You called the crisis line and a hospital to commit him, but you never called the police?

Why?

You need to call the police. If you let him think he can get away with this type of behaviour it will never stop. Just because he has bipolar doesn't mean he doesn't know what he's doing. He knows it's wrong.

Did his eyes go dark evil and empty?? What you just posted is the tip of the ice burg of what I went through for 5 years of my life. Always walked on egg shells, I would try to run and hide. Soon enough your kids will see him do these things to you. Escape him!!

My partner shoved and choked me when he had a very bad reaction to his new medication. I plead with him too. I eventually scratched his face and pushed him off of me. When he let go I was out of breathe. I freaked out and ran to the bedroom with the cell phone and called 911. It was the only number I knew. I asked for the police with the 100% intention that they would take him to the hospital. Last time he went to the hospital the police escorted him therefore I thought this was the right thing to do. The police arrived and arrested him with DV. He received no medical attention despite my requests for it. End result nothing is better. Right now he is off of his medicine THANK GOD even though the doctors and social workers he is trying to get appointments with adamantly say to take them. The medication in my opinion caused the violence. The verbal/emotional abuse was always there. Why would the doctors possibly want him to take the exact same cocktail without seeing him. Now I deal with his emotional abuse and sensitivity. I wish I had the number for the hospital. I don't know what the right thing for you to do is. I would try to have him committed as a danger to himself and others. Also I'd keep my distance from him when he's released until he has followed through with therapy. It was suggested to me that I stay at a woman's shelter. No point risking your life again. I think it's crazy that partners of people with bi-polar put their lives at risk. I think there must be something wrong with us. I'm trying to separate myself/ my feelings from my partner. I need to remind myself that the man I love in the normal times is temporary and that it isn't fair or healthy for myself to wait around for those normal times. No matter how much I love him or how happy we can be.

Hi, It is never ok for you or the family to be abused whether it is physical or mental. We can make all the excuses in the world for this behavior, meds, no meds etc. No matter what it is not ok and no one deserves this treatment. You should file a police report asap. You must protect yourself and the kids first and foremost then look to see if you can help him. You need reports and evidence. Down the road you have no idea where this may go. He does need help and if he can realize what he has done and let you help him then do that if you feel you can, but you don't need to be under the same roof to do that. You must protect your family, it will not be long before they see what is going on. Do not teach your children that it is acceptable to allow yourself to be treated that way either. I grew up watching my dad beat the hell out of my mother. even if you think they don't know, they do. Believe that! Back then there were no labels for what was wrong with him, and he's dead now so we'll never know. The more I learn about this, the more I understand how I have ended up with a husband who is bipolar. He hasn't been violent towards me, I have sworn to myself that I will never let that happen, but the mental abuse is just as bad, and I know that is usually how it starts until it escalates to violence. Your children DO know, and they feel the anger and the hatred coming from him. It will hurt their sense of self worth and they will be afraid of him and "walk on eggshells" like we do. I have just recently come to this realization about my husband, and I hope that we can get him some help. From what I have read about the medications, I'm afraid to go that route. But knowing what it is now, I can quit blaming myself and so can our kids. Good luck to you dear.
