I know how much you want him to be able to see your kids. How long would his probation be? Once he's off paper I believe those restrictions go away unless he's a high level 3 on the registry (depending on the state you're in...) Do you and the kids live in the house?
Could you find an efficiency apartment somewhere close?
I sent you a PM....
$200/week is outrageous for therapy! I paid $40 per week and even at that they had allowances for people who could qualify for assistance. You will have to ask the therapist and/or PO about that.
As far as the lawyer bill I'm not sure if that can be added to his chapter 13 or not. (My lawyer ran into 5 figures and I don't think I got my money's worth!)
There needs to be a new dialogue about all of this. I remember Clinton signing Megan's Law in the 1990's and thinking that it was a good idea. The Supreme Court decisions date back to that time as well. Victim/survivors controlled the dialogue then as they do now.
Everyone wants to help a child who has been harmed. That's a "no-brainer" for most people. The unfortunate part about that is that "no-brain" means that thinking is no longer applied to a situation. That is what we have now. That's how people can and do justify the cruel treatment of sex offenders as "justice".
But who are sex offenders? Mall and Shay...they are your son, your father. It is my husband. The financial abuse goes on and on to include us.
Does this help society? Usually, what we would do is ask for empirical evidence. So, there need to be well-designed studies that demonstrate good or harm.
Are there such studies? Yes. What do they demonstrate? That families are harmed. That victim/survivors doe not receive adequate treatment. That residency restrictions do not work, but, in fact, increase risk. Sex offenders driven out of supportive environment are at higher risk of reoffending.
When presented with the evidence, you have to say, "What the heck are we as a nation thinking??"
Well, the answer is nothing. Because we sacrificed our brains a long time ago on this issue.
Thanks for letting me rant.
