Shay, I can't offer much but sympathy, but is your son getting any kind of treatment? If you lined up a psychologist visit, would he go? Is the PO forcing him to attend any regular meetings / sessions?

I know you want answers now, but it is really too soon to know exactly what to do. You just have to take things baby step by baby step, protect you and your family. Perhaps tomorrow you can call his P.O. again. You may also call your local social services or adult protective services if you are really afraid for your son's safety. This is a complicated situation. Your son is an adult. He makes his own choices and pays the consequences. You have to protect yourself and your little daughter first. Help him as you can, but there may not be much you can do.

Thank you both peekachu and caught for your thoughts and sympathy. So far this has what I have done we took him to a psychiatrist who had seen since he was 5 for his adhd. At that time he was just having some minor depression. She put him on wellbutrin and made an appt to come back in 1 month which should be end of January. We had him committed Friday night and they let him put said he didn't meet criteria. I am sure he denied everything he is thinking and feeling. He is in such denial he thought after having this episode he was just gonna come home and everything be ok. Well we found out he has been breaking community control rules and going out to get beer from convience store in middle of the night. If he doesn't get violated I will try to get him back into his psychiatrist earlier. The problem is with community control he has to get permission to go to his psychiatrist the week before so it delays me getting him there which we could take him monday. I think he needs an antipsychotic but with him drinking and taking antidepressants that's not good either. I am trying to do some tough love but still get him the help he needs but I don't think he even realizes he needs the help

Shay Sadly he probably doesn't know he needs help. A lot of people with mental health issues self medicate. Alcohol..drugs..etc. My son was just released from prison 2 months ago and the adjustment to being outside, paying bills, finding work, paying child support and wearing that GPS sent him into a crisis situation (mentally) . We couldn't get him into mental health for 6 weeks and he started self medicating and lost the transitional home he was staying in. He's now in jail for the 2nd time. We like you don't know what to do. He may go back to prison. There is a group called NAMI National alliance for mental Illness. See if you can find a number for them in your area. They may be able to help .As of yet we have not been able to find my son a place to stay when or if he gets out. I am in NC and he is in SC and I'm not sure how that goes...Reach out to NAMI and maybe they will be able to help.

Soconfused. Thank you for your support. Someone else suggested Nami so I will have to check it out. The mental healthcare in our country is severly lacking. It is so sad. I am a nurse and I have had to deal with it in my profession but being on the other side is so hard. It's hard enough just having a mental illness but add on top of that all the restrictions of a sex offender and it's almost impossible to survive. It's no surprise that most have such a hard time staying out of jail. I think I did a disservice to my son by always rescuing him from everything in his life. I have had to stop and let him suffer the consequences. As of right now he is in some scummy motel waiting til he can goto probation office tomorrow and make sure he is not violating by being somewhere he is not supposed to be. He was staying in one motel and the sheriff office came and told him he couldn't stay there bc there was a daycare too close. So how do they navigate a difficult system when they don't make much money or have no money and have so many obligations related to their probation. He has to pay $24 a week for therapy and $280 for polygraph and $102 a month for his probation fees and pay his car insurance and car payment and somehow find a place to live. So sad but he will have to show he is willing to admit he has problems an start to fix them. I will always be there to love him but I am not going to reduce him if he can't rescue himself.

If a PO doesn't answer nor return the call within a few hours you should escalate the call to the main number and ask for the supervisor then advise of the situation or ask for direction. Also, many POs don't allow the family to set-up outside counseling. They say they will determine if it is necessary. That is bull but, I have heard of it.

Please check out NAMI. They have good support groups. And a good place to share information. The meetings i used to go to consisted mostly of parents trying to deal with their adult children. I went because my teenage daughter has issues. I felt welcome at these meetings.

Dont be so hard on yourself. You sound like a wonderful and supportive mom. You can only do so much for your son. But you can help yourself and surround yourself with those who are in the same boat.
