Politics has no logic except re-election.
Here's another article that describes "Robby" more. Part of the problem here is that child victims like this are really very damaged people. One of the main things that people fail to develop in situations like this is the ability to self-reference. That means that they can't tell who they are in relation to other people.
Meaning...little Robby is still running the show. This article does not describe the behaviors of a grown man. They are the behaviors of a little boy in a grown man's body. This is the result of his trauma.
The State of Virginia would be better off spending their money on treatment for those who are damaged like this and REAL prevention programs that help those who know they may offend as well as educating people about the truth of this issue. Instead, Virginia has chosen to dump more money into the sex offender wasteland called the "Registry".
I know you will all make comments about legislators using this to get elected. That's definitely how it works. But I think it is more complex. People react to situations like this with compassion, but they don't realize that it is misplaced. Rob is no longer Robby, yet, people respond to him as if he were and they think they are doing something "good."
Unfortunately, even if someone were wise enough to see through to the actual problems, it is too much a political football for any legislator to stand up to it.
This new law is a sad day for everyone.
That is my problem with the victims movement. I don't have a problem with them wanting justice, I understand that. What I have a problem with is they haven't done any studies to ahow the effectiveness of their recommendations. If they had, they would see that the registry does not reduce sex offenses. They would see child buffer zones help make some RSO's homeless and hard to employ. They would see the registry can actually cause more crime to occur and not less.
