As an example, the registration rule for Alabama is 72 hours (three business days). In Alaska, you are expected to register by the NEXT business day. See my travel issues guide on this subject:

The California RSOL chart is nice. I hope they can keep it current because the laws change every session. Alabama just passed an anti-clustering law for Chilton Co., and has had an anti-clustering law in Jefferson Co./ Birmingham since 2010. Also, Alabama has a tier system for Juvenile offenders on the books.
LE can also check cell phone records and or email to see the location someone is logging in at. Most local LE won't do this but U.S. marshals seem to really believe the safest place for a RSO is often locked up with little regard to length of time re-offense free.
Many big cities now have sex offender monitoring units that randomly check and verify information. Plus traffic tickets could spark a investigation if your far from your listed home.
Some states say.... Must register a address that you stay in longer than X days. Well a person could easily visit relatives more than X days overnite in a year. Also if LE does a home verification they leave a notice to contact them immediately and sometimes ask neighbors questions regarding how often is the person they are checking at the location and have you seen anything suspicious. Once again often this is not local LE but rather U.S. marshals doing compliance checks. The Marshals notice usually says contact them within 24 hours. They also try very hard to get your permission to let them in then search your computer so they can find anything you forget to register. Some states require email addresses and screen names.
Failure to register is a serious offense in most states it is a felony and if the Marshals get involved it's a ten year felony. In my state it's a four year felony and most states treat it like another sex offense and last statistic I read said 1/4th of RSO's are rearrested for failure to register eventually and the longer you are on the registry the greater the odds of violating a new law you might not even realize would affect you because you are just trying to live a normal life.
The other thing I did was buy a new car with new tags and registered it in my wife's name. That way, a reader will show nothing.
My state I have to list all the cars I drive! The year, make, model and license plate.
License plate readers are very common now.
