I read one article that the jury came back with not guilty when an officer posing as the underage victim admitted to starting the conversation of sex, which was against the rules.

I can’t believe that in 2014 we are having this discussion. Here are the facts; the U.S. Bureau of Statistics reports that 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys will be sexually abused by the age of 18. The most disturbing fact is that only 1 in 10 of those child victims will ever disclose that they have been sexually abused for various reasons. The average child sex offender has over 114 victims in their lifetime; many different studies suggest much higher victim counts. However, when speaking to amateur audiences we generally state the lower number due to the fact some people our skeptical. These are studies and statistics in the 1950’s and continue to present day. Almost 57% of those child victims will go on to become child sex offenders themselves in their adulthood. This is largely due to the fact that only 10% of child victims disclose which puts them in a position to receive counseling. The enormous amount of emotional baggage that these victims will carry for life is insurmountable for most. So here we are today debating whether cops entrap/entice adults in to these stings. Bottom line it’s illegal to have sex with a minor as an adult; enticement, fantasizing, etc. does not all of sudden make this NOT illegal. So then I hear “well they wouldn’t have done it if not put in the position.” WHAT? I highly doubt they were strapped to their computer chair and forced to communicate! Who communicates with random children on the Internet and thinks that’s just normal? GET REAL! Lastly, there are several accrediting agencies that monitor child sex crimes unit’s (not to mention case law is pretty clear on what constitutes entrapment and not any one person is above case law). If LE agencies don’t follow the strict guidelines of these governing bodies they do NOT get grant money, so whoever suggested this is for “money” you need to do your research before making such a reckless accusation. Now if the defense is not bringing to light “entrapment” issues in a case they are defending, then that’s just ignorance on their part. Now are there some small agencies that are not accredited and therefore not bound by a specific set of guidelines for funding that use entrapment tactics? It’s certainly pliable, but again, case law clearly defines the elements of entrapment and they are the same “general” elements for a simple traffic infraction as they are for a major criminal case. Please remember that 75% of what read and hear in the news is influenced through personal opinion, so it’s imperative that we know that facts of a subject before we start ranting about it. I get it, nobody likes the cops anymore, but the cops aside we are talking about children who look to us adults to protect them!!
