My husband was actually told to have a cover when he got to the low security prison he is at. But then they turn around and don't help, like not allowing SOs to have email (which all other inmates have), which can blow the cover. For him, he was transferred so he can say he got it taken away at his first place. My husband just wants to do his time like everyone else and then come home to face the BS in the outside world with the label.

when i went to jail i was told to use a cover my self but that didn't help sense some of the inmates there work in the jail they have access to the coumpters and records they will look it up and find out the truth they treated me like shit for the last 2 weeks i was in county but there where some who were still nice to me and gave me some advice on how to stay out of trouble if your brother has to go into PC then do it he may have more restritctons then others but at least he will be safe but for now he can use the cover or keep his mouth shout not trying to sound rude but that's one thing i did also in jail is kept my mouth shut

Lying about your conviction is the worst thing you can do in prison. I've been there. Lying makes you look weak and it makes people furious when they find out. And trust me--eventually people will find out. There are inmates that the first thing they do when someone new comes on the unit is check what they're convicted of. If he's honest, people might not like him, but they will at least respect the honesty.

The absolute best thing your son can do on top of honesty is go to the law library and start learning about prisoners' rights and how to assert them. There are two things inmates hate more than sex offenders: the fact that they're in prison, and abusive prison staff. Staff will hate him for it and may retaliate; but in the inmate order of things, "jailhouse lawyers" are pretty much untouchable if they're any good.

One caveat to the learning the law recommendation I just made: Be sure he recognizes and tells people his limitations when he starts getting questions. If he's asked something he doesn't know the answer, say so. It's far better to honestly explain that he doesn't know than to give someone wrong information. Personally, it's my experience that the most important thing that he needs to learn first is how to do legal research. That opens the door to everything else. When he gets good at that, start researching prison rules/regulations and doing inmate grievances. Then move on to court challenges to denials of grievances. Then to civil rights lawsuits. Appeals and other things should be avoided if he can help it, although it's fine to point someone in the right direction. He should only do highly-important work if he's confident he can do it correctly. Screwing up someone's appeal or habeas corpus papers can literally have lifelong consequences for them; so it's not something that should be undertaken lightly.

In Wisconsin, lying about your conviction will probably get you beat up... Because of the CCAP here (online court records) inmates will find out what you did... you don't even have to say anything... Best to just say what you are in for because everyone is innocent anyway... And because more and more people are in for these types of offenses you'll find that inmates don't really care...

I served 365 days. It was a county facility in Santa Clara County Ca. Everyone claiming innocence is not a true statement. The majority that I met admitted what they did and wanted to just get this over and move on. For eight months I stayed in a park like setting with mature trees. Old barracks surrounded the greenest grass in a large circle. In the center was a small chapel. That was my job most of the time. Running the chapel. Service every Sunday and other religious services just about every night of the week. It is where I was ordained. I didn't have a problem until the last 2 months, I was moved to a higher security area. I never told anyone. I said I was there on child support issues. An issue they all could relate to without question. The complete story of my time there will be in my book.
