I pray this will open the public's eyes.
You're not the only one who likes foreign movies...I lived in Germany so I was exposed to European movies and once my German became better, the more I got into them(and others, French Dutch etc that were dubbed in German)...Some of it can be a little bizarre, like Fellini, Fassbinder, Passolini, and Werner Herzog, though I do like a lot of his work...If you like old movies, Fritz Lang's 'M' is a good one...My favorite German movie is "Downfall"(2005) staring Bruno Ganz( A popular German actor) as Adolf Hitler as told by his secretary Traudl Junge(From her diary, she just died a few years ago) about the last days in Hitlers bunker....It's 5.1 and subtitled, but because I speak fair(rusty) German it seems all that more realistic...
Of course I like Sergio Leone and his 'Spaghetti" Westerns(Actually filmed in Spain, But hell, many stared Clint Eastwood)....Have you seen the 7 Samurai by Kurosawa? We copied it, turning it into a blockbuster western....The Magnificent 7...
I remember being totally surprised when I first started watching European TV...I will never forget the 'Dove" soap commercial on regular TV...It showed a woman in the shower washing...Well...Everything...And we have a fit about Janet Jackson's "Wardrobe Malfunction)...
It was funny to go into a video store and see American movies being called "Auslander".."Foreign"....
And yea, you almost always see naked people, real naked people, old, young, skinny, fat....warts and all.
Fritz Lang's "M" is on Youtube.
Another one is "The Child I Never Was" also German....Also a true story of a pedophile killer...Also quite graphic, not visual, but mostly verbal....It is about Jurgen Bartsch who kidnapped, raped and murdered 4 young boys stating when he was 15...He died in prison after a botched castration(voluntary) in 1976..I am not sure if the "Interviews" in the movie are really him, or an actor but using his words, it is very graphic sexually and violently..Like others have said, the Europeans don't usually "Sugar Coat" things...These movies aren't "Hollywooded up"....
BTW...Fritz Langs 'M' is also about a Child Killer...
Oncefallen....Talking books...Henry James "Turn of the Screw" has very strong child sexual abuse implications...Many of Thomas Mann(German) are also strongly homosexual involving minors,..A Death in Venice"...And another, I can't remember the name, but it takes place in the 20's in Berlin where a man falls in love with a young male prostitute and then his later imprisonment....Another is "Lolita" by Nabokov..Everyone, I believe, is familiar with it......All these are considered CLASSICS written by literary MASTERS!!!
Ever heard of the movie "Pretty Baby"?....It is about a 12 year old Prostitute in turn of the Century New Orleans, staring 12 year old Brooke Shields......I think Brooke Shields is still good looking, BUT, if you want to see what she looked like as a 12 year old girl, watch the movie and you will see that she was DEFINITELY Prepubscent.....Nothing is left to the imagination, NOTHING!(Also there is graphic SIMULATED sex between a CHILD and Adult, But you can still go to the video store and buy it because it is a "Classic"....."Blue Lagoon" maybe????
Any wonder why my hair is going gray????
I saw it on HBO and it makes you think...It was so traumatic to the kid with glasses that he though he had been abducted by aliens....The only heartburn I have idsthe POSSIBLE implication that the abuse turned the other boy(Chase Ellison...Later in The Tooth Fairy with the Rock, and as a teen, Joseph Gordon Levitt, hey, I'm a "Third Rock from the Sun" fan) gay...Other than that, it was a very powerful view on the effects that child sexual abuse has on the lives of the victims.....
