My question is for anyone who had successfully transferred from one facility to another, or has a loved one who is trying to do the same.

My son, who currently is in federal custody at Yazoo City, MS is trying to transfer out to a Federal facility in Milan, MI.
This is where my other post came about, when we got a call about our home in Indiana not suitable because of proximity to a "park-like" area.

Anyway, my son seemed to think that our housing situation had to be rectified BEFORE he could transfer. I don't think it does. Where we live now should have no bearing on where he can transfer to. He still has approx. 6yrs to serve. Milan, MI would actually be closer to us than Yazoo. That , in itself, should be justification enough to get him transferred?
Thoughts, anyone?

Federal inmates need to have a clean record (no "shots") for at least 18 months before he can request a transfer at "team". His case manager should have already explained all of that to him.

BOP doesn't get involved in what happens to you once you are released to the Community Corrections people. Where he lives once he gets out is dependent upon the USPO, and they follow the local laws.

thx for the reply. He has been at this facility for a little over 6yrs, and he has had no issues, other than some medical concerns.
He has put in for the transfer, but has told us if it doesn't go through, he has to wait for another yr to try again.

If it doesn't go through he can send requests up the food chain. Or at least he can request a reason for the denial.

I don't know the answer to your specific question. However I do know that if the people with power over your son's life say your housing situation needs to be "rectified" before they will give their OK then (no matter how irrational their requirements are) you will need to comply or he will need to give up the idea of transferring. Where you now live matters to THEM and they are the ones with the power to recommend your son's transfer or refuse their approval. Period. If you decide you can't "rectify" then tell your son he can probably expect to stay in the Yazoo City facility rather than the closer Milan facility. Maybe closer SHOULD, in itself , be justification enough (in your mind anyway) but apparently NOT as far as they are concerned and they have the whip hand. It is what it is.
