I think with your life experience and what you're going through, and what people get out of talking to people in similar situations, you may be a great help to those in need of support. If that's what you want to do, then go for it. But also I'd say, from my experience studying and practising counselling in general, it isn't helpful to you or the person you're supporting to say you're going to be able to help and change the world. Support work and counselling is about empowering people to take control of their lives with your support as a foundation. You won't be able to cure them or sort out their lives, but simply being there and giving them the opportunity to speak freely without that judgement that is so often thrown upon people in our situation is much more powerful.
Good luck with your choices and I hope you get what you want out of it. X
One thing that blew me away and something that you will need to do some soul searching on... one day after I had a group/individual session. The s.o. psychologist revealed that he cannot speak of exactly what he does for a living to other colleagues in the field or otherwise.
The reason is because they get treated much like we do. They are shamed because they are trying to help people who are "untreatable".
I would LOVE to see those people answering for their actions when they take their last breath on this earth.
It's a shame. The people who "judge" the most are not lifting one pinkie to help. All they do is run their mouth of "how bad things are".
