He is legally an adult, she is a juvenile. She should be punished in the juvenile system, he should know better at 18.

He is not a pedophile, clearly the wrong term for him. But again he should also know better than dating a 13 year old in this day and time. That doesn't even qualify for Romeo and Juliet! He is a misguided knucklehead that is too old now to be treated as such by the justice system, he will get the book thrown at him. Every teenage boy in America needs to understand this!

Media doesn like our posts. We make rational commemrs, and they want society to live in fear of the sex offender. Just think about it this way, you may have had a few say "I didnt think about that". i find it funny when people insult me, and then block me after I post. They like being ignorant, and I am disrupting that ignorance. Well the media wants their followers to remain ignorant, and your post upsets that.

At least they said she lied about her age to him in the US today article. She doesn't look 13, and the fact he is attracted to her doesn't make him a pedophile. She isn't a pre-pubescent girl, she is probably on the tanner scale of 4 or 5, his finding her attractive puts him in the normal range for adult males. However, he has to know to as soon as he learns she is really 13 that he will be in the deepest world of hurt if they have sex. Being "in-love" doesn't mean it's okay after he found out.

I'm sick of these girls lie about their age dating these guys and then they're on the hook for the rest of their lives.

I agree to a point. If she misrepresented her age she should be in trouble for that, but if he continues with the relationship after he knows her age he is on the hook from there on out. None of this but he already fell in love with her. You have to know that you are going to jail if you continue the relationship. I feel badly for the people who were duped, but if you continue on with the relationship after you know -- it's your own dang fault.

and how many stories like this are out there floating around? and how many times have we read that the boy 'DID' indeed break it off after finding out a girls true age? there are untold numbers of this kind of crap printed in the paper and reported on the news channels.

and after he breaks it off the girl gets pissed. she stalks him and then tells her parents or friends that "it was all his fault". it gets heard, passed around and the authorities are called to be brought in. what then happens to the boy????

This is a really small amount of people who are charged for this reason echo in comparison to the overall number of sex offenders. Most sex offenders committed their crimes and are guilty. That doesn't mean that what is happening to us is fair and constitutional.

But getting back to the topic, I think if the underage party lies about their age it should be able to be used as a mitigating factor that if proven could keep the crime from becoming a felony and also keep it from becoming a registerable offense. Have to strike a balance between protecting both parties and I think this would do just that. However no way would the DA's ever let that become law. They love holding all the cards and putting the screws to everyone and getting people to plea to whatever they want them to.

Not saying it doesn't happen or that it is terrible to the person it does happen to. My question is how often does it actually happen? Or is it much like public urinators on the registry, where it's possible and does happen sometimes but isn't all that common?

I think people are mad about how irrational the registry is and this is one of the best ways to show how irrational it is. My point has always been even if they fixed all of these irrational points it does little to help most of us. And one could easily make the claim just because it's irrational for some people like public urinators that doesn't make it irrational for the rest. I vehemently disagree with that last statement, I have seen the research and know the registry seems intuitively suited to stop more offenses but it does the exact opposite. And to people on the outside looking in at us, this looks like a defense mechanism.
