Interesting article i wasn't aware that any studys had been done on it yet.
That line.. It's not on the minds of the public. I expect a very few percentage of the public even think about sex offenders. It's all propaganda and politics. Why do they start the article with that line?
Urgent? Really?
The sexual abuse of children is an urgent and pervasive issue in our society and throughout the world. In the U.S. 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused by the time they are 18. The question isn't if they are being abused, it's how and by whom. 93% of children are accused by people they know (36% of the perpetrators are family members, while 57% are acquaintances). Some newer research is also shedding some light as to youthful perpetrators, it is now believed between 30 and 50% of the perpetrators are under 18 themselves.
I'm not sure what the issue is with that line nak?
I'm part of the SO issue but in most people's lives they never think about it. It's hyped up so the politicians can pass more bills and get elected. Replacing pot as a crime is obvious. We need to fill the prisons.
Starting this article with that line would make most people surprised to find that it's one of the most urgent issues on the majority of the public's minds.
I agree wholeheartedly that politicians are using this issue to get re-elected. Nevertheless, the fact that politicians are benefiting from it does not mean it's an idea that isn't of importance for society.
The sex offenders filling the prisons is not anywhere close to being true. According the Bureau of Justice Statistics, State prisons had an estimated 1,314,900 inmates at the end of 2013, only 160,900 or 12.23% were in there for rape or sexual assault. The Bureau of Justice Statistics also tracks parole and probation by crime, there were 3,910,600 on probation in 2013, of which 3% or 117,318 probationers were on probation for a sex offense. In 2013 there were 853,200 on probation of which, 10% or 85,320. So all totaled there are 6,078,700 people in the correction system of which only 5.9% or 363,448 people are in for sexual offenses.
I agree it's wrong what politicians are doing. They are making children less safe with these laws and are violating constitutional rights. At the same time I want to be as clear as possible that if we want to see change we need to be leaders in the discussion of trying to stop child sex abuse. People say of us why are you more concerned with the rights of he perpetrators than the rights of victims? We need evidence based practices that will make children safer and because the evidence supports it giving us our rights back.

More innocent people die in worthless wars but do people care? People are homeless in our country but do people care? Yet this is the most important issue we face?
As someone who was also abused by my father I don't make it my world. I realize my dad was just a scumbag and I live my life. We'll have to agree to disagree on that wordage.
