Saw something disturbing this morning

This morning my "daughter-in-law" posted a picture of my 5-year-old granddaughter doing some of her handwriting, which by itself was nice...........but then I noticed that my granddaughter had signed her name at the top with her mom's maiden name. I knew the DIL was going by her maiden name (not legally, yet, though), but it really hurt to see that my granddaughter had done that.

I know that in the past, the DIL had said that my granddaughter said she misses her dad. So I don't see any reason for this except that the DIL is poisoning my grandkids' brains about their dad. They are both going to counseling, but I don't know what goes on there, either.

My question is, do I say anything to her about it?

Unless she changes their name legally, the children will HAVE to go by their legal last name. I would tell this to your DIL. I don't know how much i would express to her (i.e. That she is pushing her opinion on your son onto the kids, and fear she is hurting them more), as it can make her cut you out of their lives all together.

I would tread lightly...

I was young when my parents split,y father is a horrible man, having his name did have its negative side as it is so unusual everyone knew who my parents were. It does seem a very hurtful thing to do and it would be good for you to get an explanation why she has done this but I have no idea how you could find out without the situation being made worse.

If our family name was something uncommon I am not sure if I would keep it. Myself and my husband did talk of changing our family name to protect our children as his case was quite high profile but its a common name so we didn't see any need to. Perhaps she's doing the same and didn't realise it would cause harm?
