Since 2012, NACDL’s Task Force on Restoration of Rights and Status After Conviction has embarked on a study of relief mechanisms available to those with a conviction on their record on the local, state and federal level. At an event on May 29 at the Open Society Foundations in Washington, DC, NACDL released a major new report – Collateral Damage: America’s Failure to Forgive or Forget in the War on Crime – A Roadmap to Restore Rights and Status After Arrest or Conviction. The report is a comprehensive exploration of the stigma and policies relegating tens of millions of people in America to second-class status because of an arrest or conviction. In addition, the report lays out ten recommendations to ensure that the values of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are within reach of all, regardless of past mistakes.

I read the executive summary, and it is a very good article. I have actually read it before and saved it in my "Research" Folder. Since 1 out of 4 people have a record, that should be a lot of people speaking up. Our country could not exist without these "felons" as one quarter of our population is a felon. Forgive and forget is the way to go. Many employers gain incentives for hiring a "felon". They are regular, hard working people. Things have to change, and they will. Thanks for always sharing great articles.
Here is a suggestion. If you have the NACDL report Collateral Damage that was issued about 6 weeks ago I strongly urge you to send a copy of both the full report (100 pages) and summary (7 pages) to each of your state senators and representatives as well as all your media friends a/s/a/p. I will repost it here and you should save a copy on your computer. Vicki
