release from prison

In 174 days my Hubs will be released to spend a year on Home confinement and another 4 years after that on probation. My question is, what should I expect when he is released? I know it will take some time for both of us to adjust to living together again but I am concerned more about his adjustments than mine. I will still be in the same house with the same job and routine for the most part. Everything will be different for him (we only lived here for 3 months before he went in). He has a short sentence so he will have only spent 10 months in prison and at a federal detention center where everyone is well behaved. I just want him to know he is loved and supported and make the transition as smooth as possible. Any advise would be appreciated.

Take things at his pace and be accepting of his mood swings, if he constantly asks for permission to do things even as seemingly trivial as getting food, and give him lots of reassurance that he is safe, but also keep him focused on taking care of business, but not in a pushy way. Routines are good, but not so much so that they create a prison environment.

I have found the biggest challenge is to understand that you now are part of his punishment. He will have a number of restrictions besides the home restriction. You will have to take into consideration what you will do without him being able to do. The SOR will place additional restriction that are not part of his probation. There are many messages here about the restrictions and the proposed restrictions. Please remember though, this board is a place of support where others will be able to relate to the frustrations you will encounter. There are really great people here.

He is going to come home with PTSD, possibly mild, but it'll be there. Give him space... give him time... and try to make that first week all the things he missed while he was in... even though he is going to be pretty content with just being outside those prison walls.

After that, try to keep it all normal... get him into a routine, depending on what his rules are, they come first so if he has to go out and get a job, then that should be his entire focus. You survived without him for 10 months, these first few weeks shouldn't be really burdensome to him if you can do it, so he can get acclimated.

Things are only going to get better from here, because you two are together and it is far easier to face all this together than individually.

Catspaw is right. We're so used to battling resistance in the prison system we sometimes forget there are things in place to help the person leaving prison and their families. Taking advantage of these resources would be a really good thing. Good luck and God bless you both.
