I would also recommend you call your son's case manager in prison and ask for names and phone numbers of agencies that will oversee your son's life on the outside. For example, you will want to talk to the office where he will be required to register and the agency that will place him in a halfway house, if that applies to him.
I have made similar calls and my sons won't be getting out for several more years. I have been pleasantly surprised by how kind and helpful these people can be. I always take copious notes on these conversations, including details such as names, phone numbers, date, time of day, and the content of what we discussed. I keep these notes in a steno pad. I have steno pads going back to 2007 and I refer back to them pretty frequently.
When I call these folks a second or third time, I mention our previous conversation on such and such date, so they know I'm keeping track of these conversations. I believe it's good for these people to know that some inmates/parolees have intelligent, articulate family supporters on the outside. It helps to make the officials accountable and it also makes them realize they might not have to be so much of a "babysitter" for this particular "client."
Welcome sooconfused, you've already seen the great support here for newcomers involved with this mess, 5 years..wow, that's a double edged sword, i.e. an awful LOT can happen with the laws downstream, both GOOD, and BAD.shoot, even 1 year can be tricky with the laws remaining as they currently are. I think a lot of it depends on the strength and success of our movement, how many people get actively involved for change, how much time, help, money and resources they can give towards the cause,
Now, you are in luck, there's an RSOL affiliate in SC. They can provide you with some local help and support to guide you on your journey, and also give you a voice for change and hope for you and your family. I really strongly encourage you to contact these folks in your state,
