Reception in a California state prison

My husband just began serving a 3 year sentence with 50% off. He was in the county jail for 1 week and then was transferred to the reception area of a California state prison. Does anyone have any experience with the reception process? My understanding is he can't make phone calls or receive visitors until he sends me a visitor request form. I have mailed stamped envelopes to him, but haven't heard back yet. It is so frustrating!! I don't know if he's ok, how he's being treated, or what the conditions are like. Anyone have any experience with this? How long will he be there before being transferred?

I'm not familiar with California per se, but typically every intake / diagnostic unit of a state DOC places all inmates at a zero level in terms of privileges. They do this because they don't want people accumulating a lot of things during this short transitional period. From my experience the process takes 3-4 weeks until you get classified and are moved to your initially designated facility.

I'd just expect a short period where he is out of touch. Once he is designated he will be able to fill you in on more details and you can also check with the facility itself once he is assigned to one.

You might be able to do some preliminary investigating though to find out about things like phone options - this is definitely one of the most expensive aspects of being incarcerated in terms of trying to maintain relationships with your loved ones.
