I am writing this email per our telephone conversation today, Wednesday, November 10, 2011, involving the Talk of the Nation program on sex crimes on National Public Radio.
Attached to this email you will find a report I wrote and submitted to state officials involved in the government task force, Missouri Work Group on Sentencing and Corrections.
I generally like the programing on National Public Radio but I found the program on todays broadcast exceptionally biased, prejudicial, and greatly misleading the general public in several ways about sex crimes.
Todays program consisted of three guest; all of whom had the same views about sex crimes and one of the guests made the factually incorrect comment that it is "very rare" for allegations of sex crimes to be false.
It may suprise the producers of that program to know that it is far more common than those who are anti-sex offender want to admit. My report discusses several studies done that refute the claim that it is rare for people to make false allegations about and for people to falsely confess to sex crimes.
One caller hit the nail on the head when he pointed out that lives are destroyed by even mere allegations of sex crimes and because of this it is critical that people not be given incorrect information or misled to believe that there are no consequences by making mere allegations because an allegation alone is enough to destoy someones life, as well as the lives of their loved ones for as long as they live.
I expect better from National Public Radio in reporting such volitile and public interest stories and today NPR dropped the ball by futhering myths about sex crimes, misleading the public, and fueling societal hate.

Towards the end of the program a man called in and expressed his dissent about making allegations against someone for a sex crime withouth aving evidence to support the allegation, which is what the guests were advocating on the belief that its okay to accuse someone becuase our criminal justice system will determine if an allegation is or is not false.
Controversial people get attention, attention gets money, money keeps them running... We just need to keep interrupting their 'regularly scheduled programming' and presenting the other side of the issue... They used propaganda to push sex offenders into a corner, we can use the same method to get back out.

Now think about the math that would have to be done to corroborate that randomsignupid person's numbers. OK, we have 800,000 people on the registry nationally... if all of them offended 1-20 children before they were caught (remember all sex offenders are pedophiles according to that person). So we'll just take an average of 10 for the number of offended children... That's 8,000,000 children assaulted by the 800,000 before they were caught... Nice round numbers aren't they?
We have 308,745,538 in the US already TOTAL. That is 2.5% of the TOTAL population has been sexually assaulted.
Now factor in the DOJ statistics of how many go unarrested and the recidivism rate. 90% are first offenders so we are only adding on new people that have offended against at least 10 children on average before they were ever caught. Then there are the 95% of child sexual assaults that go unreported. with this kind of exponential growth in the statistics when applied to REAL LIFE NUMBERS taken just one year ago.
This is my conclusion according to that logic. We all have been sexually assaulted by someone multiple times in our lives. We all have sexually assaulted someone or multiple someones in our lifetime. And only 5% of us will ever be caught or reported.
Now THAT'S what you call a cycle of abuse...
We do what we always do - keep the pace in the quest to draw light on the truth. Of course there will be those who do not listen. Some will do this out of ignorance, some out of an agenda for ratings and money and some becuase it is contrary to their quest to fuel hate and hysteria. But this does not mean we simply give up just because someone chooses not to listen.
I think that this is more of the application that oneofthem is after...
