It should be pointed out that this article is almost 25 years old. A lot has changed in terms of understanding personality disorders and what causes them, mostly due to having a better understanding of the brain and how it functions.
Many people will accuse others of bad acts to manipulate a situation toward what they want. Lying, emotional meltdowns, manipulating others are tricks used by everyone at some point to get their way. People with personality disorders just use these techniques to a much more extreme level and have no concern for the effect on the other person. They often lack a conscience and feel no remorse. It is infuriating when you see someone get away with crap, isn't it? While anyone may do these things from time to time, a normal person would at least feel bad about what they did. People with personality disorders do not….sometimes because they are incapable of those feelings, sometimes because their own suffering is so extreme that they lack the ability to acknowledge the suffering of others.
False accusations are sometimes punished. There was a story a couple of years back in my area about a sixteen year old girl who accused a neighbor boy of raping her because she wanted to deflect her parent's attention from the fact that she was looking at porn on the computer. He went to jail for 4 years.
Later, she admitted that she had lied. He was released. She went to jail for perjury.
To me, that was the correct response. But you are so right. I suspect this very rarely happens.
I do not believe we are in an epidemic of sex crimes, but rather that sex crimes are just reported more today than they were many years ago. The inherent down fall to the publicity such has received and more so involving high profile cases, is that people have learned that all it takes is a mere allegation and the person's life is destroyed or their credibility is shot in striving for what they are otherwise lawfully and legally entitled to receive. What better way to get even, to win a custody battle, or prevent a parent having visitation - and too many people use this evil strategy.
In many ways, sex crimes have lost the needed focus on the destruction they cause true victims, as sex crimes have effectively or essentially turned into a battle of the sexes. Its gotten to the point that men are no longer safe having sex with someone without first obtaining a signed consent form beforehand, and then videotaping their every move when around even their own children.
