ORGANIZING (starting the conversation regarding JS
janetmackie
Guess I should have posted this under Organizing since I believe that the injustice done to JSOs by the current AWA and the registry is a place to start because anyone with teenagers knows teen make mistakes (sometimes sexual mistakes) and even the courts recognize that kids should be held less culpable than mature adults for their mistakes and are the ones most likely to change if given proper direction/ treatment and not simply thrown on the waste pile, sent to adult SO prisons, placed on the registry and shunned for life. (Oh, I know "they say" SO's can apply to get off but...18 + 25 (years of systematic abuse-by-supervision) = ??? And if these Private Juvenile SO treatment "facilities: become the next cash cow what then? Just another name for "civil" commitment from cradle to grave?
The fact that no one on Daily Strength even know anything about this stuff seems to be reason enough that we ought to start the conversation no matter where we live!
Juvenile Sex Offender Treatment "Facilities" and Private fror profit Prison corporations

I am especially concerned about system accountability for the treatment of JSO's ( aka kids that make (sexual) mistakes and end up in JSO prisons/ private run for-profit treatment "facilities" because as every one knows these types of ADULT prisons are NOT accountable to anyone and by calling themselves juvenile "treatment" facilities they have another layer of un-accountability (HIPPA and the fact that these are minors many of them under court jurisdiction)
CASE IN POINT: Right now Idaho has a "treatment facility" at a former job Corps site outside of mountain Home Idaho run by some "private" operator. The take JSO's from all over the US. One of the things that concerns me about this particular private facility (the info I have Googled says they take between 12 and 18 (however I know someone who goes in there and that person says there are young kids in there from 8 through 19)
Anyway, Idaho Gazette is currently reporting a scandal with private prisons for adults so it makes me think....
Does any one from any where posting on Daily Strength have a child in this facility out side of Mountain Home? Has anyone heard anything about private corporations morphing over into private JSO prisons AKA treatment facilities? Do we know of any one, any family members dealing with Privately run for profit prisons in other states and the name of the corporations running them.?
Please provide links, comments, ANY info in any state It is important that we as families and as families of JSO's not have even more collateral Damage to deal with in the cases of our children.

I have not heard of that place but things regarding teen offenders hits home with me.. My 17 yr old son has currently been sitting in our adult county jail for 7 months awaiting sentencing because he made a dumb, yet common teen choice to have sex with a girl he liked... I'm terrified of what this experience is gonna mean to him

MomfromMO: nice to talk to you again! Thanks for taking time to comment when you are also dealing with what's going on with your son and daughter. . I just commented on your thread about advocacy too! Great Minds? I went to an advocacy volunteer training put on by the Alzheimer's association and they have good ideas that we can use if we somehow get to the place where we aren't afraid to speak out about the severe collateral damage caused to youngsters who make mistakes. .You know, the whole country felt a lot of pity ic and passed the Adam Walsh Act when John Walsh's young son was kidnapped, abused and killed by an adult. It's too bad they don't feel more pity for young kids like your son caught up in the meat-grinder the (pity-less) Adam Walsh Act has become for kids. I hope your son's judge feels he has some le-way to be merciful at sentencing..

I hope so too.. Ty..
