That Margaret Thatcher was RIGHT when she said "...and Socialist governments traditionally do make a financial mess. They [socialists] always run out of other people's money. It's quite a characteristic of them."
And you are right that a true socialist society wouldn't have a military like that... they would be like England, the EU and others, they would look to countries like the USA to defend them.
USSR, despite the name United Soviet Socialist Republic, was a variety of communism which is different than socialism.
