this may be a dumb question? but then again maybe not. maybe someone else doesn't know either.

how does one go about obtaining court records for/about a family member?

my daughter is doing 10yrs in fed prison for CP. she sent home a paper that her councilor gave one day. on it either my daughter or the councilor wrote 15yrs of registering. from what i remember of her sentencing day in court i thought that it was 15yrs probation and lifetime registry. she was sentenced in the fed court in knoxville tn.

i would really like to get ahold of her sentencing ? decree but have no idea how to do that. her PD was not what you could call helpful to say the least.... and to tell you the truth her councilor in prison doesn't sound all that helpful either.

can i request the paperwork or does she have to request it? does it have to be sent directly to her in prison or can she have it sent here to home? does she have to go thru the councilor or will one of us have to attempt to get the PD to send it?

You can call the court division to get the minutes of the sentence of where your daughter was sentenced and give them the case number and make sure you tell them it is a felony and not civil matter. You don't need it certified either. Just more money. I just ordered my son's and the cost was only $2.30. That is the least of what I have paid for this entire bull with the court system. Good luck. I am not an expert on this (and perhaps someone else can comment), but I would think if you had a power of attorney you could get this information from the courts.

yeah that's something else i have got to do.

i have had her banking accounts closed. plus i have taken care of her 2 credit cards they have both been paid off and are now closed. any subscription she had has been canceled. stuff like that are all clean, nice and tidy.

so now that everything 'out here' has been taken care of? what's left is anything relating to her case, sentencing and prison time. thank goodness i finally got a small comp case settled and paid her restitution/fines. but what ever else i need to do, i need to do at a free or extremely low cost. being on a fixed income means that there's not usually any money not already budgeted left over of lawyer fees and stuff.

and i honestly don't even know where to start.

This information is free to the public, well at least in Louisiana. I also have to pay the court reporter if I want the transcript of his hearing, which we are in the midst of getting. That is expensive though. Now if you want to call your attorney's secretary, she can give you the case number. I would not use an attorney to get this information because it becomes a Cha Ching again. You can do this yourself. Just call the clerk and ask to be directed to the Judge's chambers and speak with the clerk and ask your questions. They are really nice and helpful if you need the help. They will direct you to where you need to go. I am here if you need anything else.

You can get court documents from pacer.gov you have to register for the access and agree to pay any charges. If you only get the court documents for one person it pretty much ends up being free. You only need the district of the conviction (northern Florida) and the name of the person.

Can you get all the notes from the trial? Or only the sentencing?

My son's NY PD told his MT PD that all of this was available on pacer: **WAIVER OF INDICTMENT,
**PRE-SENTENCE REPORT, **STATEMENT OF DEFENDANT WITH RESPECT TO SENTENCING FACTORS ,
**JUDGEMENT.
So far I have not had any luck finding what I am looking for.
