Although pleas are very hard to appeal, there are also other avenues you can take. Obviously, an appeal is a starting point, however, you can file a Post Conviction Relief (PCR) and/or a sentence Modification. On a PCR, it's as if you get a whole new trial. The sentence modification is pretty self explanatory, you go to the courts and ask for a modification on the sentence.
I agree with Sunnie......I would try going to the ACLU and filing a complaint for the rights of your son and his mental disabilities. (That's how I would state it also, mental disability)
Be very careful with the courts though, some states if someone suffers from Mental Dissabilities, the sentence is more harsh, due to the re-offense rates.
I am not an attorney, so you will have to talk with one, but this is information I have learned through my son's ordeal.
My prayers are with you!
