Hi all,

My brother was convicted of possession of child pornography. This has resulted in a lot of stress for me and my family, and I have a few bad memories I'm still dealing with. Things are better now, and my brother still lives with us, but it still hasn't fully sunk in for me even a couple years or so later, and I don't think things will feel normal again.

Sadly things have never gone back to "normal" for me, but I've found a new normal. I committed my crime as a young teenager but it wasn't brought to the police till when I was an adult so I was charged as an adult. I completed probation and tried to move on the best I could. Several years later I'm married and have a stable enough job. So things are normal-ish. I still avoid children if I'm not with my wife, I know it only takes one false accusation and I will not get the benefit of the doubt.

I know asking what state seems weird, but the experience on the registry really depends on what state you are in.

Independent is right, our experiences differ depending on what state you reside in. I live in CA, so everyone is in the regairey for life. Other states, someone with your brother's conviction will only have to register for 10 years...sorry you are here, but glad you found us.

California. My brother says he'll never get off the official registry, but he might be able to get off the public registry within 10 years.

So, your brother can get a certificate of rehabilitation and petition the courts to be granted removal from the registry. Only a very select few are able to be removed, and it also depends on the county. Have your brother check with CARSOL, as they can help him with that process.

I do hope your brother can be removed. That is a light at the end of the tunnel.

California is not one of the better states for offenders, but like thought is saying there is a silver lining. They have one of, if not the best, RSOL groups in the country. They are fighting like badgers out there and winning court cases to make it more livable for people like your brother. You guys should definitely check it out.
