From what I know, they are doing to ask you a lot of questions to determine your risk score. Questions like, are you married, are you employed, have a support system, have stable housing, and several others (I don't know them all, maybe someone else can chime in on those). Based on your answers they will take a look at your risk level when they compare your answers with others. They will look to see if you have any prior arrest records. They may contact friends/family (they contacted us, but don't know if that was because we were married or because our daughter was the victim).

They will then make a recommendation on the sentence based on your risk level and the crime you are pleading guilty to. There is also no way of knowing what the judge will do when they look at this report, they may follow it, they may ignore it. It all depends on the judge. I know my husbands report was favorable, showing him to have a very low risk level, but the judge decided to give him the max.

When my husband did this he went in to talk to the pre-trial officer with his lawyer. He was basically asked what Thoughtasweak says above. They also followed up with phone calls to me and all his immediate family. Dress nice, wear a collar and tie, slacks and dress shoes if possible. Be respectful, "thank you" "yes or no sir or mam". The lawyers told my husband to only answer the question directly. Do not give more info than you have to but be pleasant. You want them to like you so try to relax and keep breathing. My husband was allowed out after his plea deal but we were told that is rare. He was not taken into custody till he was sentenced. His case was federal. I hope this helps.

Since you mention PSI, I am guessing these are federal charges. I can't imagine why your case is moving this fast. Pleading guilty on the same day that you are charged is something I have not heard of. I'd say the average time is 12-18 months.
For my PSI my Pretrial Officer interviewed me for about 20 minutes in person. She then spoke to my parents and my fiance over the phone for about 15 minutes each. I was on Pretrial for almost 5 years. Arrested in 01 and plead guilty in 2005, so we had a long relationship with no problems. None of her questions were about my charge (possession of CP), it was all about me and my life. Everything about the charges was done in an interview with a psychologist and then that report was included in my PSI.
1 thing every lawyer should recommend is .mentioning your problem with alcohol. This could get you into RDAP which is the ONLY way to get time off of your sentence in federal prison. Get something in your PSI, you can get up to a year off of your sentence.

I have already signed my plea deal. My lawyer says this is not a very common situation but they already worked it out and I agreed to it. I signed it last week or so and my plea entering is on Tuesday.

I was just asking because I want to know what to expect.

FYI: My husbands case went along very quick. It was only about 5 months from when he was charged to when he was sentenced and taken away.

just keep in mind that the psi report is like the bible to them feather the info in it is wrong or not they will use it and any thing you say is wrong they won't bel eave you about it

Also keep in mind that as rickybennett says "Their psi evalualtion" is like the bible TO THEM...as the process goes on every elevator reads the last evaluator's 'evaluation" and they believe each other more than they believe you. They are not impartial 'referees" and after awhile the number of evaluations of you as "whatever" stack up and take on a life of their own (separate and apart from who you really are, apart from any progress you have made, are making or will eventually make. This is part of the labeling process and labels (once affixed) really do matter because they telegraph "information" without regard to the reality of what actually occurred or who you actually are or are becoming. PSI are used not only to fix the sentence but the parole board reads them, the 'justice' system uses them to decide your tier level (dangerous-ness) if and when you are released onto the Registry...Therapists use the label (and mix that in with what they 'learned' in school, in workshops talking to other therapists/ like mined evaporators as they re-cycle and re-affix "labels" that began with the first elevator at the first psi....And of course even if there is occasionally a more 'favorable' evaluation none of the evaporators want to contradict each other because if they do...well where will their next pay check come from...In a way (most) of these guys work in concert with the victim's advocates to help the prosecution and just like the victims need to remain "forever" victims to justify the sentences the Prosecutors ask for and often get...the evaporators (from the psi on through the system) need to freeze the "offender" in place to justify what happens next. I know this is all pretty cynical sounding and it does not always hold true but in many cases it does...SO never believe you are your label...never think "Evaporator's now best" they are just human beings who need a pay check and want to belong to "the good guy" club you know those guys "tough on crime" who are working every day to "protect Children" Don't let them jerk your self respect around...you have shown a lot of courage in all this and you are actually one of the (actually) good guys who maybe made a mistake and should have every chance to participate in "restorative" justice so whatever the psi report says a good or bad "evaluation is pretty much a matter of luck in what elevator gets picked to do your evaluation. Unfortunately if you get a "unfavorable" label the label will stick and make a difference for awhile especially if you believe the label and decide to hate yourself...
